    What is the best brand of popcorn to buy? Are there good kinds without transfat?

    I like Jolly Time 94% fat-free. This is only 2 points for the whole bag and it seems to pop, for me, better than some of the others.

    Are you sure about the points? I seem to remember reading that a regular size bag is 4pts and the small bag is 2pts. Have I been counting them wrong?

    Popcorn values have been researched & questioned since I joined WW over a year ago. I have Orville Redenbacher's Smart Pop in front of me, which, as I've been told, is the lowest points available. Based on the info on the box, one serving is 7.5 cups popped & each bag has 2 servings a bag. Based on this information, a whole bag of OR SP would be 4 points.

    I also don't know of any other brand that is 2 points for an entire bag, with the exception of the single serving (or smaller sized bags). On the other hand, I don't know if I've ever actually gotten a full 15 cups of popped popcorn from a bag, either, & I never eat an entire bag at one time. So I try to just measure my first 7.5 cups out & use what's left over as my next serving size, no matter what it really is (& still count it as 2 points a serving--not a bag).

    (OK....If you're tired of confusing info on popcorn points, then here's the correct...and FINAL answer!!! I [not me one of the girls at the official W/W site) called Jolly Time and spoke to the person in charge of nutritional info for their product and this is what she told me: One whole bag of their 94% fat free popcorn has 250 calories/5 grams of fat/15 grams of fiber. Their 94% fat free kettle corn has 250 calories/4.75 grams of fat/10 grams of fiber. This works out to be 5 points for the whole bag. (Not greaat news for all of us who were counting it as less) The problem is the fat and fiber changes from what they list as unpopped, as well as for 1 cup popped, so it's impossible to calculate the points correctly for any popcorn unless you find out from the company exactly what the cal/fat/fiber are for the complete bag. I hope this clears up all the confusion on popcorn points!)



    HEALTHY CHOICE:

    1) Low Fat (large bag) 180 cal/5 fat/6 fiber or old program 2 points and new program 3 points


    ACT II:

    1) 94% Fat-Free 250 cal/unknown fat/unknown fiber or old program and new program at least 5 points
    2) 96% Fat-Free 200 cal/2 fat/10 fiber or old program 2 points new program 3 points
    3) Light 250 cal/10 fat unknown fiber or old program and new program at least 6 points
    4) Natural Light 240 cal/8 fat/8 fiber or old program 4 points and new program 5 points

    *I use .33 fat grams as if it is less than .5 grams the FDA regulations indicate it can be listed as zero.

    #I use .5 fiber grams as if it is less than 1 gram the FDA regulations indicate it can be listed as <1 gram.

    As of 2-3-01 the points have been updated for ORVILLE REDDENBACHER, POP SECRET and JOLLY TIME.

    I will have to do further research on HEALTHY CHOICE and ACTII.

    As for the fiber, it states that it contains less than 1g per 1 cup popped. I counted it as .5g per cup which gives 3g fiber per bag.

    This actually calculates out to 2.3 points per bag using Dotti's calculator set to "Exact Points" mode. If you set it to "Half Points" mode, it comes out to 2.5 points. Using the "Whole Points" mode gives the 2 points.

    I have provided the exact points since there are some folks who count to the tenth point, some to the half point and some to the whole point. Just round accordingly for which point counting method you follow.

    3.22 points for both 1-2-3 Success (older plan) and Winning Points (current plan) programs

    buttery topping for small serving - in addition to popcorn:
    120 calories, 14g fat, 0g fiber
    3.56 points for both programs

    5.97 points for 1-2-3 Success program

    I have the Jolly Time in front of me. Where I came up with the points is off the box. It says servings 2.5 servings. Each serving is 5 popped cups. One serving is 90 calories, 2 g. fat, 9 g fiber = 1 pt. per 5 popped cups. I measured out the popcorn after it was popped and it came to not quite 10 cups popped which would be almost two servings. I've never tried any of the microwave popcorn that all popped and you had as many cups as listed on the box. I agree with judyo. You just have to measure out how many cups you eat because I'm sure each bag pops differently.

    If that's what it says on your box then you're technically correct, just a tad over 1 pt. per serving. However, if you're following Winning Points or Flex Plan & you decide to eat the whole bag in one sitting, you are really consuming more than 2 pts. because in these 2 plans we cap the fiber at 4 pts. a serving, & most of us consider one item eaten at one time to be one serving. Also, if you do truly get more than 10 cups popped (I have gotten up to about 12 cups on a good day), there's a bit more calories & fat involved, too, as the box states it's supposed to be 2.5 servings a bag. So I came out to 3 pts. a bag for 2 servings; I'll have to start buying Jolly Time since I think I prefer it.

    Those were unpopped stats. One cup popped is 20 cal./ 0 fat/ 1 gr. fiber.

    Ok because you don't use the unpopped values to figure the points:

    Calories: ~10 x 20 = ~200
    Fat (FYI it will actually be between .4 and 0 for the fat because of the way FDA has them list it so 0 isn't really accurate...I usually use .33 on the fat) = ~3.3 or less
    Fiber ~10 x 1 = ~10

    200 cal/~3.3 fat/10 fiber is what you are really eating

    I usually always get what the bag says when I pop but here are some tips/hints to help you:

    1) keep your popcorn in the refrigerator - helps keep the water in the kernal so they pop better

    2) take the bag out about 5 mintues before you want it

    3) heat 1 cup of water to boiling in your microwave and remove

    4) don't use the popcorn setting on your microwave, I usually set my microwave for about 8 minutes and listen for when the kernals stop or get very slow...I never burn it and almost all kernals pop

    Hi College Girl,

    You've got a lot of helpful information about popcorn here, but I didn't see anyone mention anything about your trans-fat question, so I thought I'd let you know I did see a brand in the store that had no partially-hydrogenated oils, so I would believe it has no trans-fat. I can't be 100% sure, and I forget the name brand, but it may have been smart-beat.

    When you're shopping, I'd just look at the labels to check the ingredient lists for any partially-hydrogenated oils or shortening. If I remember to check again, I'll come back to let you know for sure the brand I saw. Good luck shopping & choosing. :bcbsalute

    OK everyone... maybe I'm nuts and stupid at the same time, or maybe I'm onto something nobody has found yet...????

    I have in front of me the box for Pop Secret 94%Fat Free Butter Popcorn... in the SNACK SIZE.

    According to my POINTSfinder a bag of this popcorn is only 1pt... and even though they are snack size it fills a large bowl and fills me up plenty!!

    In case I'm missing something... here is the important info straight from the box!!

    Serv Size 3 tbsp. (42g) unpopped
    (makes 6 cups popped)
    Serving Per Bag 1
    Servings Per Box 10

    Amt Per Serving 1 bag (31g) Popped

    Ugh.... nevermind me... I just noticed the tiny " * " that is ALWAYS there... it changes the info slightly which ends up making it 2 pts popped... or maybe it's still only 1 1/2.... with the POINTSfinder... how do you tell if something is a half point??

    I've always thought something is a half-point if it falls right on the line between points values, but different people might approach it differently. :bcbsalute

    Smart Balance has a low fat with NO trans fats. I don't eat transfats so this is the one I buy. It tastes very good.

    I'm one of the few, I guess... I buy a sack of popcorn and use my air popper.
    I mist it with butter flavor spray and sprinkle it with salt! Yummm!!

    I found the snack size at Walmart yesterday. Technically, IMO, it should be counted as 2 points for the bag. In doing the math it works out to 1.61 points per serving. I'm fortunate regarding the Kernal Seasonings, one of my local grocers carries it!

    I use the WW e-tools, which counts the 94% fat free pop secret snack size as 2 full points. (it's part of their online database) Sorry. Still, it's very filling and I have a snack size bag nearly every day.

    I also love the seasonings, though they are high in sodium, making it extra important to get my water in for the day!
