Thread: Maryland Crab Points

How many points do we think Md Crabs are?
I am sure it depends on size, but a med-large, meat only (no mustard or fat), but a heavy one, not a paper lite one.
If I take just the meat out and put it in a measuring cup, is that what they mean but 1/2 a cup? The reason I ask is, I recently had crabs, I gave 8-9 crabs about 8 points. They fit the category I just described. I want to be sure I am counting correctly. I couldn't put all of the meat into measuring cups, but I tried a couple. They didn't exactly fill the 1/2 cup line.
    Please input.
    Thanks!!!!!

I don't think I can answer all parts of your question, but yes, they mean meat only, taken out of the shell, when they're measuring 1/2 c., which is 1 point. (I love crab.)

I hope so, my group leader scared me and said that the way she eats crabs, about 6 jumbo would be 35 points. I hope she was kidding. She probably meant that she eats all of the yucky stuff. But it scared me. I love crabs too. We just got a bushel over the weekend and I loved it. I had Michelob Ultra Lite (2 pts), corn on the cobb (1 pt), home made crab soup (2.5), and watermelon. Typical Maryland summer send off. But, the way I counted the points, it wasn't that many. Thanks for getting back to me.

I live along the Chesapeake Bay and have crabs often. I've always counted them as 1 point. Some crabs are light, others are heavy. I figure if I count them all at 1 point, it evens out. Light beer is a must, along with corn on the cob and home grown tomatoes.

Maybe your leader uses melted butter with her crabs, and that's why she counts them so high.

I was thinking that she was counting all of the fat (like crab mustard, and the stuff around the shell) that may be high fat, I am not sure. I don't eat all of that stuff. I just eat the meat. A pt a crab sounds okay. I do dip the claws in Louisiana Hot Sauce, it's the greatest flavor. My sister dips in red wine vinegar. I hope that my leader isn't dipping in butter, that would be a waste of good points, that could be used for beer and corn. I also like to have a frozen yogurt afterward, for somereason, something sweet always goes well after crabs.
