Thread: 13 points for 3/4 inch slice of zucchini bread?????

This REALLY ticks me off. How can it be? Does anyone else disagree with this calculation? I need to do some figuring on my own to see if my wife's zucchini bread is worth this many points.

    Ouch!

Can you post the recipe? That way we can figure it to check your numbers.

Sounds to me like this zucchini bread is pulling the ol' carrot cake scam - a ton of butter and nuts in it to boot, I'll bet.

    upon further review...

I just dissected my bride's zucchini bread recipe and it's raw materials...

    1 1/2 cups flour 13.5 points
    1 cup sugar 12 points
1/4 cup vegetable oil 9 points
    3/4 cup walnuts 15 points
    1 cup zucchini 0 points
    1 egg 2 points

This adds up to 51.5 points per loaf. If my bride bakes in a 9 inch pan, and each slice is 3/4 inch, then there are 12 pieces in each pan.

    51.5 12 = 4.3 points per slice.

I feel much better now. And now, I think it is time for some zucchini bread.

LOL, TCO, the way you wrote out that last post made me think of it as a math problem on the SAT.

If you have the points, eat a slice for me too! That sounds so goooood!

    Madeline,

Funny you should mention it, I AM a math teacher. I didn't think it was that obvious.

Have you thought of asking your wife to change a couple items like instead of using regular sugar use splenda. It takes like regular sugar and its free.Instead of oil use apple sauce or one of those other substitutes you can get in the oil aisle.I substitute alot now.Sometimes its not as good and sometimes its alot better.

Bursting your bubble: there are 16 points of sugar in one cup. (eww. ugly.) and 1/4 cup vegetable oil is 12 points.

Here's the math: 1 tbls sugar = 1 point. there are 4 tbls in a 1/4 cup, 16 tbls in one cup.

    Oil: 1 tbls oil = 3 points; 4 tbls in 1/4 cup so 4x3=12.

Re do the calculation on the zucchini bread.

I just ran this through MasterCook.

I got per slice (12 servings):

    Cal. 216, Fiber 1 g., Fat 9 g.
    Points 5

This also has 4 g. protein per slice. Not bad for bread. And of the fat, only 1 g. is saturated fat.

So the original calculation isn't off by enough to worry about. It certainly doesn't work out to 13 points!

OK, I have a question about the 1 cup of sugar points. I located this post because I searched 1 cup of sugar because I need to know how many points! LOL! Points aren't totally exact... so I don't think you always want to take the point amount of a small serving (ie. 1 tbs) and convert that to a larger serving (ie. 1 cup) because it won't be totally accurate. If 1 tbs is for example actually .93 points... it will look like 1 point but when multiplied by 16 it's only 14.88 rather than 16... KWIM? So does anyone know how many calories a cup of sugar has? Assuming zero fat and fiber... calories for 1 cup would be the way to figure it.

According to the USDA Database 1 cup (200 grams) of sugar has 774 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. My calculator works that out to 15.5 Points per cup.

And from my previous post, and for rounding purposes, 1 tbls sugar = 1 point. there are 4 tbls in a 1/4 cup, 16 tbls in one cup.
    so, 1 cup = 16 points.

TCO, at least zucchini bread sounds somewhat healthy. I think you sound so sweet to call her "your bride". Keep up the good work and enjoy your bread!

Just wanting to post what the Week 4 "baking with points" hand out says about sugar:

Sugar: Brown, packed 1 cup 17
    White 1 cup 15

Every body figures points in their own way, but this is what WW states in their hand out.
