Thread: grain weevils, help!

    Default grain weevils, help!

I recently found out my pantry is infested with grain weevils. I had to toss most of my boxed items. I looked on the internet and there were quite a lot of "tricks" to keep these bugs at bay. Has anyone on here had this problem? Do you have a tried and true way of dealing with them, before they become a problem?

    Thanks, Brandy

I keep a lot of my grains in the freezer, unless I go through them very rapidly. I keep bay leaves in some of my grains that aren't in the freezer. I heard this deters insects...

    Question Re: grain weevils, help!

And isn't there something to do, like freeze your grains FIRST and then store them in your cupboard?...

I have kept flour in the freezer. I usually use my grains fast enough that I don't need to keep them in the freezer.

I'm keeping smaller quantities now, and buying them more often.

But I did get bugs in my oat groats once, and had to throw it all away.

I hadn't frozen them first AND I wasn't keeping them in the freezer AND it was a large amount of oat groats.

Like Lynn, I keep a lot of my grains in the freezer. With some of the grains I will keep in the cupboard just the amount that I will use in a week and put the rest in freezer or refrigerator. I started doing that after having to throw out a bunch of stuff that had gotten infested.

Thanks for the input. I think the online consensus is to freeze or refrigerate all dry goods. I definitely can't do this again. Throwing away food is hard, especially when you're on a budget.
