A Single Defeat

I just had to go and open my mouth last month and say I was going to run a 5K. Wouldn't it be cool if this blog was a victory story of how I struggled and persevered? How I rose above the pain and ran a personal record in my first race? If that's what you're looking for, let me give you a heads up and suggest you find something else to read today. If you want reality, read on.

I just finished my fourth month with Weight Watchers. I still love Weight Watchers. I love the flexibility. I love the emphasis it puts on health. I love feeling like I'm taking care of myself every day I stay OP. My total four-month loss is 25.2 pounds. I definitely love that.

Here's what happened. I set a goal for myself to run a 5K in the month of June. I picked a race on June 26th. I laid out a 5K route to train on. I timed every run. I obsessed about how I did. I worried about how much I walked. Was I pushing myself hard enough? Was I going to fail? I had to try harder. On June 13th I felt really good. Weather was perfect. I told myself this was it. I was going to show myself I could do it. I did it. I ran every step of my 5K route. I felt good until I woke up the next morning and could barely support myself on my right foot. Long story short - I tried running two more times in June. Both times were miserable. Both times I hurt myself worse. On June 20th I admitted that I needed to take two weeks off. No race on the 26th.

For anyone who doesn't like to fail (like me), I'd like to share a few myths I used to believe that this experience and some very smart buddies have helped me rethink.

MYTH: Fear of failure will help you succeed.
TRUTH: Fear of failure keeps you from succeeding because you are afraid to try.

MYTH: What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger.
TRUTH: Pushing too hard causes injuries. Injuries make you weak.

MYTH: It is a tragedy when you don't reach your goal.
TRUTH: "The tragedy in life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. It lies in having no goal to reach." Benjamin Mayes

MYTH: Acknowledging pain shows weakness.
TRUTH: Pain is your body telling you something. It takes strength to listen.

This month I learned the importance of never confusing a single defeat with a final defeat . . . and I'm not done.
