:help: OK guys, help me out here.
I'm having trouble finding the motivation to exercise.

I know I was supposed to start at week 3, but I put it off. My reasoning was that I was too fat to do much without injuring myself. I planned to start once I hit my 10% goal. Of course that has come and gone and I still didn't start. I guess I figured I was still dropping the pounds without it, so why bother.

I have finally started to get some walking in withing the past 3-4 weeks, but it hasn't been very consistant. It's not that bad and I feel pretty good afterwards. It's also kinda fun to earn some APs (and I can sing old Army cadences in my head to keepme going). One of the few "benefits" of being so heavy is that you earn more APs with less effort. Anyway, I'm walking 2-3 times a week, but I really don't have any kind of schedule to speak of.

I plan to start doing some weight training one of these days. I have a fairly nice home gym collecting dust in my garage. I used to really enjoy working out when I was a teenager. I figure I would probably enjoy it again if I could just get off my ass and get started!

Any advice, stories, words of wisdom or threats?
Help a brother out.

Todd, you are a bright and caring guy. Why would you not use all the tools you have to get this done?
It's time to use that care and brain for your benifit.... You do so much for others. Make this your time.
My advice....Go slow, get good shoes....
Get busy, you are too important to let this slide.:bcbsalute

Todd! Okay, I never imagined myself ever saying this but I LOVE walking. I get kind of a rush from doing it - I think it's adrenaline, or maybe it's the rubber glue factory that I walk by :p ...but either way I find it really gives me energy. In the past I really thought people who exercised were sick and demented  but, I'm starting to get it.

I am in no means an athlete and I have tons of self doubt while I'm walking. I try to walk as it starts to get dark because I'm paranoid about what others say, thoughts of people saying "look at that fat freak trying to exercise" go through my head. I am starting to just not care because I am feeling way too good to let others bring me down. They can just kiss my fat freak butt if they can't see I am trying to make my life better.

I highly recommend the walking. It totally sucks at first but I promise it gets better. Music helps too.

Good luck - let us know what you decide to do and when you do it. I got faith in you. :work_out:

I have a very fond memory of the first time in my adult life actually jogging over a mile...I just started laughing and asked myself "Who are you and what do you do with CW????"

All movement is good movement.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about romance. I used to get questions regularly about activity points and romance.... My answer was standard. You cannot count it unless you can sustain the activity for more than 20 minutes.:D

Thanks guys. The walking has actually been fairly enjoyable so far. I even found a website that has some military cadences available for download. I think I would do better with those as opposed to music. The "beat" is more consistent and they are designed to regulate your breathing. (Take a deep breath, shout out the cadence. Repeat) The problem is that it's October in Indiana and it's getting cold and rainy. Soon the snow will be here and I don't have a place to walk indoors.

I think the home gym is probably my best bet until spring, but like I said... it's the motivation that is the hard part. I know it's something I'm supposed to do. I feel kind of guilty seeing all of the women posting on here about working out so hard and losing a couple pounds while I do nothing (except count points) and usually lose more. I guess feeling guilty isn't enough to get me going tho. I just haven't "hear the click".

Maybe I still have that "it's working without exercise" mentality still. Maybe I subconsciously don't want to add muscle because I think my weekly weight losses will get smaller.

I guess I'm a little confused about weight training too...
What kind of routine should I do?
How often should I do it?
How do you count APs for lifting weights?
That kind of thing.

Thinking back, I really wasn't to gung-ho about joining WW either, but I told my wife that I would try to do it with her. After I drug my feet to the first meeting, I developed an obsession with eating healthy. I think I would probably do the same with exercising if I just start doing it. My willpower and discipline has been surprisingly (to me) strong regarding food, but I think this problem with being lazy is the chink in my WW armor.

I'd better stop now. I'm starting to ramble.

I never had done weight training except for a small set of hand bells (2.5 and 5# sets) to use while I'm sitting here. That only lasted about 6 weeks...now they are sitting here collecting dust. (only because they are too low to the ground to hang my clothes on....)

The tread Mill...on the other hand, is great for most of my clothes:D

Todd,
It's real important to find your "thing". Find something you enjoy and you won't dread or see as something you have to make yourself do. Remember what exercise is. MOVING but over and above what you do on a regular basis. If you like sports, play some.
For me I love boxing and Martial Arts. So before I trashed my foot I punched the bag for an hour and worked out to Tae Bo tapes.

Hey HD,

You need to make your exercise more enjoyable... I use an elliptical machine and read and watch the news at the same time; you can also read on an exercise bike.

If you are walking for exercise, I would suggest getting a portable CD or MP3 player and either listen to music, public radio (the news) , or my favorite audio books which I borrow from the library.

Keep posting and keep up the good work.

At 327#s I'm afraid that I'm too heavy for most treadmills. An exercise bike might not be a bad idea. I could use that while I'm watching The Biggest Loser. (Instead of sitting on the couch eating Fat Free Pringles) I could probably pick up a used one pretty cheap too.

I know it seems kind of obvious, but the thought of a bike had never occured to me. :embarrass Duh!

Thanks KyGuY.
(Sorry, I don't think I caught your real name)

<KICK!>

Ok, now your turn! Exercise is hit/miss for me...I just get too busy, but so far, I've maintained a loss on a consistent basis, so something good is happening.

With the cooler weather, I drive myself to places I enjoy walking-the mall, WalMart, parks, etc. Hey, it's not hard to walk 15-20 minutes around WalMart..expecially if it has a grocery store in it. ;)

Bottomline is, time has to be made. When I grocery shop, I make a point of adding my walking in while browsing...

Maybe I should have asked the girls. :p

I'm new here. This seems like as good a thread as any to "weigh in."

I am new here, but not new to WW. I have been on-and-off (as have the pounds) for several years. I am significantly overweight (boy, do I hate the word "obese") - 284 when I started WW for the last time 10 days ago.

I say the "last time" because I must make this work.

In March I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I managed to deny it until September because my sugar was still relatively low (I tested at 129 when I was diagnosed, which is very borderline, but was up to 145 when I started WW.) and my other health is good - no high cholesterol, blood pressure is excellent (except when I think about the word "obese).

My wife is just a couple of years behind me, classified as "pre-diabetic," so we are committed to doing this together.

The interesting thing about me and WW is that it has always worked for me... until it doesn't. A flat week and I quickly lose interest in depriving myself.

Exercise? Well, I have the equipment. And I paid for a gym membership for two years without going. It would be funny if it weren't true.

But all this must change if I am to survive.

I am committed.

Regards, to all
Dave

One thing that has worked for me is setting a schedule, get into a routine. Whenever I'm off from work (and the weather is nice) I go to the park and walk after dropping my daughter off at school. The scenery is great to look at and I enjoy listening to talk radio. I also put on ankle weights while I walk. I'm thinking about wearing the ankle weights when I'm at work since I do alot of walking.

Thanks Shadow. I think you're right. I think once I get a normal routine going then I'll do OK. It's just getting started that's the trick.

The good news is that I think I've found my motivation and plan to start soon.
Thanks Vince! http://www.healthdiscovery.net/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Tae Bo, eh? I may have to look into that.
Altho I'm afraid it would only reinforce my delusions of living a secret double-life as a fat ninja! :D

Just a follow up post FYI...

I did my first workout yesterday on our home gym. Jen (a personal trainer) gave me a routine over in the Exercise Forum. It was a bit awkward at first, but things started coming back to me as I went along. I tried to keep things light, but I was still really weak/tired afterwards. I thought I'd be really sore today, but it's not that bad. I guess I need to work harder! :D

I plan on skipping today (as advised), but I'll try to get a walk in later anyway. Then back at it on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, etc...

Thanks for the support and kicks everyone.
Especially kcityroller. He's really the one that got me off my butt! http://www.healthdiscovery.net/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

As someone new to WW, some advice would be appreciated. Particularly I have questions about Activity Points:

1.) I am a High School history teacher who walks around the school a bit but no big deal... However, I also wait tables at a fine dining restaurant a couple of nights a week and some nights this is pretty tiresome work. HOW MANY POINTS WOULD THE FOLLOWING BE?

It is a small restaurant spread over 3 floors - the customers are typically legislators and other VIPs, so they keep you running for things. I am usually in constant motion and go up and down a flight of stairs 30-50 times. All of this happens while carrying 10 to 60 or more lbs of food, drinks, plates, etc.

I know all of this should count as APs, but I work for 4-7 hours twice a week and WW AP calculator says "brisk walking" for 240 minutes is worth 24 points.

Help.

2.) Do I really have to count APs? I am pretty big and am given 32 points a day. Going into my shift at work last night I had 20 something points left. I did eat the Smart Ones Ziti and some Kettle Corn for a combined 10 points, but I still had left over points. I worked 7 hours last night - There is no way I can eat more - my appetite has been shrinking and I really was full!

Man, you are hustling. To be safe I would count this at light activity and then eat ALL those points. That is still 16 points.

To get them in you need to spread them out more evenly over the day. Perhaps a Larger Breakfast and some snacks that are higher calorie/high protein... I use raw almonds. They do not fill me so much but 1/4 cup is 4 points and has 'good' fat.

If I am eating "good" things

Coffee, Milk, Apple Cinn Oatmeal

Carrots, Dip, Veggie Bowl Pasta thing, salad with mushrooms and FF ranch,

Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and 1 tootsie roll

Bag of Heathly Time Kettle Corn

Baked Ziti smart one, and call it (we have to try the special) 1/2 cup of pan-seared Red Fish over garlic mashed potatoes and covered with a crab scampi.

Plenty of water....

Anyway, I really did feel very full and not deprived, etc.

I need help understanding why I would then try to eat another 16 points.

If you are working the 'machine' harder it needs more fuel. If the fuel is not in the daily consumption the body will look for fuel elsewhere, pulling it from stored fat (good thing) and muscle (bad thing) indiscriminately. By using the Activity Points (the day you earn them) you make the process more efficient, more effective.
Feeling deprived may not be a safe measure. Sometimes we train our bodies to expect less. One of the things we are working on is training the body to expect the right amount.

Getting (at least) the daily target points is reqiured. The activity points are optional, according to WW. I have seen more people succeed using them rather than avoiding them. Your opinion matters more when it comes to your body.

I've read quite a bit on this forum about how if you don't eat at least your daily points that your body can go into "starvation mode" and actually start storing fat. Not a good thing.

If you need to used up some extra points in a healthy way (in addition to raw almonds) try drinking some orange juice. Good stuff, but not very point friendly.

Thanks for the OJ tip.

The other day I used a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and a large tootsie roll. OJ would probably be a better choice, but they were delicious

Hoosier Daddy
11-07-2005, 06:49 PM
I'll bet they were. Actually I've heard that Tootsie Rolls aren't that bad. (point-wise)

Don't forget that the OJ counts as a water serving.
Maybe a fruit/veggie serving too I don't know.
