I've made this an attempt to rekindle interest in the the mens' forum. I heard from many who were dissappointed in the way I handled the forum in the past.
Let me know your thoughts about this new tact and we may learn how to get through this together....:bcbsalute

Thanks for the reboot! I've only been here a short time, so didn't see a lot of the "old style" ... actually didn't see much that reminded me to check back in until my wife asked me "what was that boot camp thingie again?" ...
Hope we can kick up the activity a bit - I'm tired of going to meetings of all women, focused on all women. My wife and I are doing this together (WW) and I really have to watch what I say regarding my weight loss. She's stuggling with losing - real small increments and yo-yo'ing up and down - granted, she only wants to lose another 10lbs. I keep trying to tell her she's almost there and I still have a long way to go, but my sucess reminds her of her smaller sucess - sucess that I can't convince her is a good job, because she says "yeah, but you lost more!" I went to an earlier meeting on Saturday and let her go to a later one so she can't compare our loses there, but she still compared them when she got home.....argh!!!

If it helps...

My wife and I have been doing WW together too. (since 6-11-05) She was a little disheartened by my larger losses too. (The fact that I literally weighed almost twice as as her didn't seem to matter) ;)

Anyway, after a while she noticed something that really put things into perspective.... we both hit our 10% goals on the exact same week! Sure I was losing more pounds, but percentage-wise we were losing about the same.

BTW, we are both getting close to hitting the 20% mark soon.
Hopefully within the next couple of weeks. http://www.jeeps4ever.com/Smilies/Smilies/crossed.gif

:) Maybe that story will make your wife feel better.

I wondered where all the posts went. Was starting to browse through them for tips.

I have emailed WW with my request for more "male-oriented" material. I purchased a couple of WW help books"The Coach Approach" and "Stop Stuffing Yourself" and was dismayed that they were both written for the ladies. While that's not a bad thing in itself, I am not a lady and could use some male advice on these topics.

Britain has the MP5 plan for men, why can we have something like that here?

I found that flex was perfect for guys in my classes. I had more men members than most leaders (gals would drag their spouses in ) so I tried my best to include them in. It was easy because we tend to slose so much faster then women that when guys 'got it' they lost really well.
The first step is finding out how much we need as a minimum and maximum. Once we know the rules we can kick a**

CW,

I agree. My family(Me,wife and daughter) are doing WW and it would be nice to be in an all-men's group as an additional support. We lose it faster and frankly, I got tired of hearing at the meeting from the ladies that lost .0001 pounds for the week complain that I lost 2-3 pounds JUST because I'm a man.

When we did WWatWork, I would find some of the ladies in the breakroom chowing down on the pastries of the day and hearing them laugh it off when I would say "no thanks, don't have the POINTS for that", yet they wonder why they didn't lose when I would just pass that party by and go to my desk. I knew what I was going to hear at the next meeting.

I lost the weight because I stuck to the plan. I chose the plan, not the gender, but I am happy with both. :)

Thank you!

Glenn

I got Boo's from the women at Jewish Community Center in my origianl WW meetings. I knew it was not me they were booing but it was unsettling. I told them truthfully that I was three times their size but, they were not happy with that answer so I made a list of the reasons why men lose faster.

We tend (not always true) to have more muscle so we burn cals more effeciently
We do not tend to have the cooking responsibilities so we are not 'tasting' for others
We do not have the hormonal challenges women have
We don't have to 'put up with' guys!
Most of us have spouses that help. So, my best advice far anyone wanting to be successful is get a wife....it worked for me:D

I think having a men's forum rocks. I hope we can keep it going, it's great to hear how other guys are succeeding.

Looks like I picked just the right time to find this BCB forum! Thanks for a men's room (so to speak) to discuss our specific challenges.

I'm new here, but not to WW. I reached goal/lifetime over ten years ago and am still at goal. I still go to my weekly meetings for the support, advice, and accountability. I know that if I ever let down my guard all my weight (110+ pounds) will creep back. I still cannot be trusted around mayonnaise, potato chips, Mother's iced animal cookies or hard candies!

Thanks for letting me join in.

Since everyone seems so warm, I'd like to share my own progress with you guys. (Please understand that I do not mean this as bragging. I hope it does not come off that way. I am simply excited because it is working.)

Today was the close of my second week of WW (this time <G>). And it is going famously! I am down 11.6 pounds. That puts me 42% towards my first 10% goal! (Started at 274.6, now at 263.0 - 1st goal =247)

What I would really like to share is how my wife and I are doing this.

See, we've been doing WW off-and-on for years. And, that is how the weight has been - off and then on again, usually with a few extra pounds. Maybe some of you can relate.

With me having been diagnosed with type II diabetes a few months ago and my wife only a year or two behind for the same diagnosis, we decided that this has to work for us this time and forever.

So, the first thing we did was look at why we had failed in the past. And maybe "failed" isn't the right word. After all, we did lose weight, we just did not keep it off.

We decided that we failed because we still wanted to eat the old way; still wanted to eat the old foods. So, we are determined to actually change what we want to eat.

Personally, my problem is that I like large quantities. And I do mean large. When I was a kid growing up, I remember going to someone's house for dinner and seeing them put out four pork chops for five people. Four-for-five! Do that at the Major League level often enough and you wind up in the Hall of Fame, but it's not much fun at the dinner table.

I guarantee that would never have happened at my house. We'd have had four chops for each person! (I am not kidding.) Okay, so now you understand how I got into this mess to begin with.

No dietary change is going to work for me if I feel deprived of quantity.

And quality is an issue, as well. I am simply never going to be satisfied with watercress sandwiches, no matter what quantity of them I can eat.

So, we looked at our eating habits and asked what we were doing most wrong in terms of long term damage to our bodies.

I am convinced that some foods simply must be "off the menu" for me because I cannot eat them in moderation. A four-ounce steak? Please - get a grip. For me, being "gratified" from a steak starts at about 12 ounces. Four ounces and your just teasin' me - just reminding me of how deprived I am.

We are using the Wendie Plan rather than Flex because that way we have to actually have the points in the bank before we spend them.

I am very fortunate in that I like a wide variety of foods. Some of these are just awesome with a little adjustment.

For example, I love eggs. (Why does this make me think of Larry Holmes? Or was it Spinks?) But unlike most people, I actually like the whites more than the yolks. So, for breakfast I have a nine egg-white omelet. Nine egg whites! When I add mushrooms (free) or salsa (free) I have just had a massive breakfast for a whopping three points!

Recently I changed to Egg Beaters. Personally, I cannot tell the difference between them and whole eggs.

For main courses we have switched from beef and chicken to fish and shellfish. Okay, so the cost has gone up, but it is worth it. And in the long run, losing the weight will more than get the money back in the medical bills we don't get.

Last night we went out for a buffet. All you can eat crab. Okay, they have a much wider menu than that but I came for the crab. For the price (point-wise) of a 12-ounce steak I can have three-pounds of crab! Even I can't each that much.

Tomorrow night is our "big" night - 44 points - and I have a few saved as well. Not sure how I'll spend mine. Maybe one of those steaks.

So, this is what we are doing. Wish us luck.

Regards to all,
Dave Schwartz

PS: Oh, my blood sugar has dropped 18 points in the last 14 days. If I can get it down another 3 points, I will not even be classified as "diabetic" any more.
