View Full Version : Labels We Give Ourselves

Last night our leader discussed the labels that we give ourselves--dieter, big boned, chubby, etc. It was interesting to realize how those labels really can sometimes define our success as well as ourselves! I have to admit since I have started WW I have NOT used the word diet (I can't stand the word because it makes me think of things like starving, deprived, strict, etc) and have to convince myself on a daily basis that these are lifestyle changes--not short term solutions.
Is it funny how the term exercise even makes people groan (it has a negative feel to it) Our leader told us to use the word "activity" as it seems so much more positive.
Does anyone else find themselves staying away from certain terms and "labels"? Just thought it was really interesting--kind of a lightbulb moment for me!:exercise:

I loved this weeks topic! My leader gave us each two pieces of paper and had us write a past label on one and a label we would like to be identified with on the other. Then she had us crumple up the negative label and throw it in the garbage and told us that if we don't go into the garbage to pull other things out, don't go in there and pull out the hurtful label - meaning leave it in the past where it belongs and move toward the new label, which we are to carry around with us to pull out and re-read if we find ourselves heading for the virtual garbage can.

I try to stay away from the term diet as it seems like a temporary label instead of a permanent healthy change.

We had the same topic this week. It was a great topic.
Diet never sounds good. WOE (way of eating) sounds sad (oh woe is me). If anyone asks I just say "I do Weight Watchers" or "I eat healthy" "I don't eat those types of foods".

We did the 2 pieces of paper thing too. I thought it was great!

This was one of the BEST meetings ever...!
It made me feel so close to everyone else as we shared what we've been called and what we still call ourselves. :p
I finally felt close to some people that I have found no common ground with for over a year of meetings! Just hearing the awful things they've been called made me feel instant empathy...
I think we will be a really tight cohesive group now, thanks to this topic and meeting~ :bcbsalute :buddysmoo

We discussed this topic today too. I have been a perfectionist in the past....all or nothing type thinking. I'm sure some of you can identify with this. That is what I wrote on my "old" label that I threw away, but I couldn't think of a good replacement label. I want to be able to make mistakes and not "throw in the towel" as a result. Any ideas?

Jamie,
For a replacement label I thought, "what do I want to be/feel on the inside and outside?"
I came up with: "Healthy, Vibrant Woman"
(My old label had something to do with being frumpy....I can't even remember it now...I guess the exercise worked!)

I like the idea of using the term activity instead of exercise. :bcbsalute

I pitched my "Lazy" label in the trash when I got home!
