Just wondering, I haven't seen it anywhere, does it count as a meat subsitute?

These are the Boca brand products that are counted as Core:

All American flame grilled burger
Grilled vegetable burger
Original (vegan) burger
Original ground burger
Roasted garlic burger
Roasted onion burger

bumping up. If like me you have not been able to find Boca " meat"products anywhere the last few months, I e-mailed them and learned that they stopped making products in April 2005. Not enough sales. Darn.

That is so weird because I just noticed last week that our grocery store started stocking a larger range of Boca "meat substitutes." I wonder if my store is the "outlet"--all the Boca stuff is being sent to our store. But that doesn't really makes sense since I live in a primarily immigrant area of the city and our grocery store is mostly "ethnic" foods.

I bought a big box of Boca Vegan Burgers at Costco or Sam's Club a few weeks ago. My stores all still carry the burgers, but I have been unable to find the "crumbles" in a very long time.

I hope they don't stop making these. I love the flame broiled and the vegan burgers. If we were counting points, the flame broiled ar 2 pts, and the vegan are only 1 pt.

Their web site does not say anything about shutting down, but the grocery store manager confirmed they have not been able to order since the spring and anything I bought after that was probably from freezer storage.
I miss those 1 pt burgers. sigh....

I hadn't heard about Boca - that's a drag. I have to say that I generally prefer other brands of veggie burgers anyway. As a vegetarian I might have a different take on the veggie burger issue.

The getting started booklet says that "vegetarian burgers, frozen" are Core. I personally count all meat substitutes as core unless they are breaded, fried or in a sauce that has sugar or non-Core oils added. Seitan which is wheat gluten and tempeh which is fermented soybean cake are both also marked Core in that first booklet.

One of my staples is Morningstar Farms vegetarian sausage links. I have half a package (5 links) every morning. It would only be 2.5 points if I counted it but I count it as Core also. They have a really high nutrient density, are mostly processed soy like vegetarian burgers, and have one of the best ratios of protein to calories I have found (the sausage patties have an even higher ratio but I prefer the links).

I have been loosing really well so far so it doesn't seem to be hurting.

I can't get off my Dr. Praeger's veggie burgers. Some are one point (some are two points).

ALL are delicious! If you can find a box, TRY them! I bet you won't be sorry~ ;) :D

Carol, do you count your Dr. Praeger's as points or consider them Core?

They're Core, Janice~ :) Page 26, Getting Started booklet, "Vegetarian burgers, frozen" = Core.

I just mentioned points for Flexers.

As far as the Dr. Praeger "stuffing" goes, I'd add in some cooked bulgar, too, to make it go farther~ YUM!http://img14.photobucket.com/albums/v41/raidermombcb/eat.gif

What about the morningstar sausage patties? I didn't see them specifically listed by brand as core, but they are awesome meat substitutes.

Have you tried them? Are they any good? They were a little pricey and wanted to ask you specifically about the salmon flavor.

I haven't seen the salmon ones, Jill. My TJ's only has "California" and Tex-Mex". They are frozen veggie burgers, so I know they're Core.

What about the salmon ones? Do you think they're Core from the ingredients list?

:) :bcbsalute

Oh. I'm just guessing. But I BET they'd be wonderful..

I can take one burger and add in lots of grains and vegetables and make a delicious and satisfying meal (with the Dr. P veggie burger costing about $1.00).

It's pretty similar to the California and Tex-Mex ones.

Oh YUM! I just tried Dr. Praeger's California veggie burger. So good! I put it in a whole wheat pita (counted the point of course) with ketchup. Loved it!

I was a little nervouse because I don't usually like a lot of veggies but it was delicious. I love the way it crisped up under the broiler!

Thanks again Carol!

I found the Dr. Praeger's burgers at Costco, a hug box of 16 for $9.95 I think. I don't know which ones I have after looking at their website I think I have the California ones. They are great! My 1 year old DD even likes them- an added bonus:D .
