View Full Version : FRUCTOSE is Core

9 months on Core and I JUST discovered that!
It looks like sugar, measures like sugar, and tastes like sugar (only slightly sweeter). You use 1/3rd less in cold recipes, and the same as sugar in heated/baked recipes.
I bought the Estee fructose and it was quite expensive: $4 for a small box. I also found fructose in bulk at Winco, for about a $1 for the same amount.
I've just begun to experiment...It's GREAT in my smoothies. It made great homemade hot chocolate. I like it better than Splenda, but it has calories (same as sugar~ :p ) but for some unknown reason...it's CORE?! :)
Has anyone else tried fructose?

nope, but I am going to look for it. I would love to stop using Splenda. I am getting used to much less sweetness in my foods but always looking for options :)

Let me know what you think after you try it, Sodacracker! :)

I know that Pmad is using WheyLow which has a good amount of fructose in it. She posted about it on the super healthy eaters board as a sugar alternative. I was going to try it after I move (next week) but if I can find fructose I'll use that instead since its core.

I am interested in how it is also. Are you doing it for the health benefits? I know it has more calories than splenda (which I don't mind), so I was wondering.
I have also used stevia and erythritol as sweeteners, but I prefer the erythritol. It is a sugar alcohol that is very low calorie.

I'm doing it because it's Core! ;) LOL.
I was ready to try WheyLow, but it wouldn't be Core. Fructose is supposed to have a lower glycemic index and is metabolized differently, causing less of a spike in blood sugar (I believe). (WheyLow is even better that way~)
It's been recommended by the Diabetes association for years as a healthier alternative, and I've just read that they are now taking away their recommendation (telling diabetics to limit fructose to that eaten in fruit only). I'm not certain if that is true, or not~ And I don't think it has anything to do with fructose being good for you or not...I think it's a healthier choice than table sugar.
I like spreading out my options: using fructose, Splenda, and sucanat (a natural brown sugar that is wonderful...!).

I like sucanat; stevia tastes "odd" to me athough I know many like it; Splenda is OK but has a definate fake and overly sweet taste to me; I would like to try fructose and I am using white sugar occasionally and counting it. Overall my goal would be to stop having a sweet tooth :D, but, if it is part of me, then I need to figure out ways to satisy it and feel OK about the sweeteners.
I will look for fructose at the store next week.

I put 1 TBS. of fructose in my Baked Oatmeal recipe (instead of 3 Splenda packets). It wasn't quite enough. NEXT time, I'll try 2 TBS. of fructose.
But I can't imagine it needing more than 3 TBS.~ I'll just have to see~

I looked at a few grocery stores and could not find it. I will try a bulk baking store next week. btw Carole, I cannot find fructose in my CFC or the newly obtained updates I picked up at my last meeting. Where did you see that it? Is it "official" that it is Core?
Curious in Canada lol

It's official! Page 326, CFC, Sugar Substitute: Estee, Fructose, natural sweetener, 1 packet (0 point), and, 1 tsp (1 point) is CHECKMARKED "CORE". :bcbsalute
There are many people on the WW website who just can't understand it. Again, it needs to be used "responsibly", just like any food on the Core list~ :)
I think it's on the list because it's more expensive, harder to find, and people are less likely to transition to something "new". They also must have "tested" it and found it wasn't a trigger for their "average" Core test-subject.
It's a better choice than table sugar, though (lower glycemic index). And I'm glad I found it! :) I made a a great chocolate drink yesterday (on my Bonjour thread).

Thanks! I'll check out the Fructose. I'm having too many gastrointestinal problems from Splenda and all sugar alcohols. I've sworn off them, but have some food I prefer a little sweeter, especially my oatmeal.

Me, too, Kathy. I still like my oatmeal sweetened...and it's great in homemade cocoa~

some people dont find stevia sweet--something to do with our internal makeup--i find it bitter--i like splenda, but its an artificial substance--as i have been trying to really work with whole foods, maybe i will try this--thanks for the recommendation--can you please, as you are on maintenance, let us know if you notice an appreciable weight gain when you have used it for a while? that would be wonderful--:)

I went to the bulk store where the manager said he had heard of it but had no idea how to order it. His staff tried to sell me "fruit sugar" which is just instant dissolving regular sugar used in jam making, I guess. They suggested I go to the health food store. I stopped by a chain grocer and found it in the diabetic candy section, on the bottom shelf in dusty packages. I bought 3 in case they decide not to carry it anymore!
Now what to do with it? Hmm I may go back to experimenting again, lol.

I don't know if you like buying online, but I have used this site before and it is dependable. They charge like $5.00 to ship your order so you would need to buy more than the fructose to make it worthwhile.

I'm going to look for fructose today. I'm going to check the diabetic sections instead of the sugar aisle. I'll let you know where I find it.

ahhhh.......just sprinkled a scant 1 tsp of fructose on some of the ww Core granola and ff milk and, by george :p, it was delicious. Funny how that little bit of sweetness can make a food feel more satisfying and filling. I loved not using Splenda.

Isn't it GREAT, Sodacracker?!
I think so too~ :)
A little goes a long way~
If you get up to having used one TBS. in the day, you can count a WAP for it. :bcbsalute

No fructose at my grocery store (small town). I did find a 10 oz box of Estee at my high-end drug store in the diabetic food section. It was $3.50 for the box. I'm anxious to try it on my oatmeal.
I'm taking the box to my meeting for "show & tell". My leader does Core, thanks for the page number so I can prove it!
