There are many different classes of antidepressants. Some cause weight gain and other cause weight loss. You can look and see if your particular med has a website...more and more drugs are doing that now. You should be able to get lots of info from there. Also, call your pharmacist so you will know what to expect.

Furthermore, patients who were treated with LEXAPRO experienced no clinically important weight changes as a result of therapy. Patients should be sure to talk with their healthcare professional or doctor promptly if they have any side effects when taking LEXAPRO™ (escitalopram oxalate). A simple adjustment in dose may be all that is required.YEAHHHH! Thanks for the advise.. i didn't even realize it had a website. I am not the smartestin computer.. I am new to meds anyway. I always said "i will do it on my own" NOPE NOT THIS TIME.

I was on Lexapro last year, and have been off for almost a year now. I didn't really experience any side effects, although they briefly switched me to Wellbutrin and I found myself feeling like crap. So in MY opinion, the Lexapro seems to be the best out of the (only two) I've taken, but from everything else I've heard.
If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, I am always available to talk!

I have been on Lexapro for a year and it worked for me for about 8 months when I seemed to have a backslide. I went on Cymbalta about a month ago to see if it would help out in addition to the Lexapro. Unfortunately, now my concentration is at an all-time low because these medications brought out the bipolar disorder that was hiding just under the surface. So, in addition to those two, I am now taking Topamax which has a tendancy to cause a minor weight loss. The mind works in very strange ways to let you know that something is wrong. I did experience a significant weight gain, but I do not contribute it to the Lexapro, so I wouldn't worry. I hope you respond well to the medication because the darkness of depression is a place I wouldn't wish on even my worst of enemies. Good luck and God bless!

I've been on Lexapro for about a year. I love the stuff. It did make me sleepy at first. However, the only other side effect I had was a decreased libdo. Which didn't bother my husband very much since he's 24 years older than me. Fortunetly, that side effect didn't last too long!

I am currently taking anti-anxiety medication and I started to gain alot of weight. It is a side effect of medication, but also, my doctor mentioned that as you feel better you tend to eat more. Where before you may have had a loss of appetite. I went quite awhile feeling that I could blame the meds for my weight gain. Now that I am on ww things are getting better. You may have to work harder, but you can lose or maintain the weight.

I have been on Lexapro for almost a yr now and while it might not make you gain weight it does slow your weight loss down.. at least in me it has..but other than that no side effects..the libdo was down in the beginning but then it came big time so that is good because other pills had killed it...I only take 5 ml every other day of the lexapro but I also take buspar and the combo works fine..

I've also been on "Lex" for about a year. In terms of weight gain, I was gaining before I started it because I was self-medicating with food. Since I started it, I've played with about 10 pounds back and forth pre WW. In other words, my weight has been relatively stable, and I have been able to lose.
I was very worried about weight gain with Lex because my initial major weight gain came from Lexapro's evil grandma Celexa. Lex has been noooothing like that. And again, a big part of the Celexa weight gain was the fact that I was so happy and chipper that I didn't worry about "scales" or "fat"... Whoops! In other words, I don't think my metabolism changed very much, I think I ate much more. And *that* I can control
The side effects I have noticed with Lex are some teeth clenching (weird, huh?), a little bit of a memory problem (seems like I've been searching for words or names more often), and some sleepiness. They're annoying, but since my anxiety has improved and I'm feeling pretty good, I'm more than willing to put up with them. Cost-benefit analysis and all that.
Of course it's really important to remember that every drug affects everyone differently. I lost 20 pounds 'accidentally' while taking Effexor, someone else I know gained. Celexa helped me find those 20 pounds and a good 30 more, but someone else I know who took it gained none. Just try and be objectively aware of any changes in your behavior/body over a period of a few months and whether or not you think they're meds related. Other people can be helpful in this respect "Hey, do you remember me.... before this?"
