I suddenly feel like everywhere I turn people are encouraging me to eat more Omega three. Not to be ignorant, but isn’t that the thing they needed to activate on the movie Galaxy Quest that jumps time back 13 seconds? But seriously, I know sardines are high in Omega three, but yuck! Can’t deal with it. Also olives. That sounds good. But what are the supposed benefits of Omega three and what other ways can I add it to my diet?
TIA

Hey there,
I'm taking a nutrition class, a required prerequisite for nursing, this semester. You can get your Omega-3and Omega-6 from flax seeds grain not oil, wheat germ, fatty fish(salmon, bluefish, mullet), seeds, nuts, Pacific oysters and other marine foods, canola oil, soybean oil, and soybeans.
I hope this helps!

After my best friend turned me on to these, I don't take any others. My entire family is taking them and NOW my dog too!! Yes, I'm serious. Come to find out, that Omega-3's help dogs to shed less. I happened to find it on the back of dog shampoo and then again on dog shed-reducers and looked it up on the internet. So everyone can benefit from Omegas right down to your family pet!

I remember once we bought some omega-3 enriched milk. All I can say is YUCK. It tasted like fish.... really bad raw/rotting fish. But don't let me put you off omega-3 milk...... :water1:
Supplements are great though.

I get mine from flax meal. It has a nice nutty taste and is loaded with fiber. It gets added to yogurt usually. I buy the seeds and use a coffee grinder to mill them. My dog likes it too. :)
More on using it for pets, it's down on the page a ways:

Don't forget eggs! Another good source of Omega 3. There is an article in Fitness (March or April edition) about them...

I started taking Omega 3 when I started WW. I eat one of Udo's Ultimate Oil Blend pills and 1 tsp. Nutra Sea every day.
The difference in my hair is astounding. I have long hair and in the past when I combed it - esp. after washing - my comb was full of hair. Currently I don't lose ANY hair at all. Absolutely nothing - even after I wash it and it’s all tangled. Whoever said they give it to their dogs to not shed - it does the same thing for humans. :p Omega's do a LOT more than this and are essential to our cell growth and health.

I used to eat salmon once or twice a week - I've stopped since the news last year that farmed salmon is not wholesome. I'd been using ground flaxseed and the special eggs for awhile, so I was pleased to see how well they serve as a replacement for the fish.

See if your healthfood store sells Hemp seeds. They contain Omega 3, 6 and 9 and can be eaten raw as a snack or put into soups and stews.

Okay, here is what I have read about omegas--
omega 3s have the least amount of saturated fat compared to 6s and 9s. They are used for all cell maintenance and can be found in numerous foods and oils. The lower the number (3,6 versus 9) the better.
flax/linseed
57% omega 3
18% omega 6
16% omega 9
pumpkinseed
15% omega 3
42% omega 6
34% omega 9
corn
10% omega 3
24% omega 6
60% omega 9
soy
8% omega 3
50% omega 6
28% omega 9
walnut
5% omega 3
51% omega 6
28% omega 9

I just stumbled across another interesting fact about Omega 3. I was in my health food store recently getting my multivitamin and some calcium. The clerk told me that Omega 3 is best taken "cold." She said that even though its in fish (like salmon), the heat from cooking destroys most of the Omega 3. She recommended the supplement. Has anyone else heard this?
