I had the most absolutely delicious breakfast this morning! I got the recipe out of "The Breakfast Book."

Take 1 cup of steel-cut oatmeal (also called "pinhead" oatmeal), and mix with 2 1/2 cups water. Cook overnight in a Crock Pot, and in the morning, you have the most delectable oatmeal there ever was - in fact, I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to regular oatmeal again. :) It was almost like a dense pudding - I mixed it with a little Splenda, and licked the bowl! You can serve it with milk if you want, but it's wonderful just as it is. :)

This makes enough for 2-3 servings.

I LOVE oatmeal. Where do you find this steel-cut oatmeal? I'd love to try this!

HI!

This is the oats I eat almost every day. (I buy the organic ones) They are like tiny nuggets, not flat flakes. They are more "toothsome" than rolled oats. I cook mine with homemade unsweetened soymilk, a dash of almond extract and a pinch of white stevia powder. Then, I stir in a TB of natural almond or peanut butter and 2 -3 TB organic plain yogurt. Deeeee-lish! And the nut butter adds protein.

You can find steel cut oats in most health food stores or online at Bob's Red Mill: http://www.bobsredmill.com/catalog/index.php?action=showdetails&product_ID=279

Mardee~ Do you put in cold or hot water to start with? And do you cook on "low" or "high" all night?

Sounds GREAT! :)

Thanks for the info Momma! I have to take my son to soccer tonight, and there's a health food store near the soccer field we are going to, I'll definitely be stopping in. :)

I've got steel cut oats in the pantry staring at me each time I reach for the rolled oats! Just take a guess what we're having for breakfast in the AM!!

Carol, I start with cold water, turn it on right before I go to bed, and it's ready first thing in the morning. I use my small 1 1/2 qt. crockpot, and it only has one setting, which I'm assuming is low.

This small crockpot is great for stuff like this, by the way - I bought it at Kroger's for 9.99, and it's worth every penny. It only has one setting, but does have a removable stoneware crock. I also use it for things like Brown Rice Pudding....

As Momma said, you can buy them in lots of places - I get mine in bulk at Wild Oats, but most regular grocery stores have them sitting in with oatmeal and other hot cereals. Look for brand names like McCann's Irish Oatmeal, or Hamlyn's.

Thanks for sharing this recipe. I have my little crock pot in the cupboard, just waiting. This fits in perfect with my busy mornings.

I have a large crock pot and I even set a timer so they only cooked 6 hours and I doubled the recipe and it still overcooked around the edges. The insides were sure good though. I saved the tough crusty outside and am going to try to eat it like a bar. I tried this another time with oatmeal and the same thing happened. I thought it was from cooking it too long, that's why I set a timer but maybe my crock pot cooks too hot. Anyone have any other ideas about how to keep this from happening? I wonder how long they'd really need to cook? I could reduce the time. Also, are Scottish oats the same thing? I saw them at my local grocery and they were lot's cheaper than the McCann oats I got.

I LOVE steel cut oats!!! I eat them almost every day with some frozen fruit that I thaw out. DELICIOUS!!! By the way, I can't stand the regular oatmeal....way too mushy tasting for me, but steel cut oats have some texture and are creamy all at the same time.

I think you can also cook these in rice cooker with a "keep warm" setting if your crockpot is too big.

I tried steel cut oats (McCann's brand) for the first time today.

Wow! Very hearty and filling and really good. I'll definitely be making it again.

Now if I can just find one of those little crockpots I'll be all set!

Thanks for the tip!
