Could someone tell me if any of the vegetarian bacon available (Morningstar Farms, etc) is any good? I have been wanting to try some recently, since DH is a vegetarian and I am on WW it would be a great breakfast item. Problem is, I seem to recall buying some once and hating it and I don't want to make same mistake. I know that these companies are always changing their products however, and it could be improved by now.

I realy like some of the other vegetarian products from MSF, Boca, and the Gardenburger people.

Any advice?

Thanks!

my husband loves morningstar's bacon. he microwaves it and I swear it smells exactly like real bacon -I'm not crazy about it but I am not into the IDEA of bacon or its smell when cooking =)

tonight I tried morningstar's chicken parm and it was amazing. I recommend cooking it in the oven. It ruled.

I like it, but when I discovered (I'm not a vegetarian) that the point value is the same for regular bacon and the cost is much higher, I just went back to regular or turkey bacon.

I love the Morningstar Farms veggie bacon.

Since I'm a vegetarian, I find it a great alternative to regular bacon.

I hate the veggie bacon that's store bought. I make a much healthier home-made tofu bacon.

1 lb. extra firm or firm tofu (I use tree of life firm)
2 tbsp nutritional yeast (they have this at the health food store)
2 tbsp soy sauce (I use bragg's soy aminos, also from the health food store)
1 tsp liquid smoke

Cut tofu into 16 bacon shaped pieces. Press between two cutting boards (with towels wrapped around it) until excess moisture is out. (I put a heavy marble lazy susan on top).

Spray your frying pan with cooking spray. Cook the bacon at medium for 10 minutes on each side, or until the white color changes to a light tan.

Mix the soy sauce (or Braggs) and the liquid smoke in a small cup. Take the tofu off of the heat and mix in the soy & smoke. Stir around to cover all the pieces.

Put the pan back on the heat. Sprinkle evenly with the nutritional yeast and stir until all the pieces are coated.

Each piece has about 40 calories and 1.5g of fat, using the ingredients I listed. If you use lower fat tofu, you can reduce that. Two pieces make a mean blt. Add tomato, lettuce, and your favorite spread. Depending on what spread you have, you can have a 3 pt. blt. :)

Thank you, Rincaro, for the recipe. I don't have any talent with tofu .... it confuses me. I am not vegetarian, but my husband is and we meet in the middle on many foods, but I usually get frustrated with tofu. No matter how "firm" the tofu or how much I drain it, it is still a soggy affair.

I bought a box of MSF breakfast strips the other day ..... we'll see how it goes!
