I know this has come up before in other forums...and let me preface this by saying I KNOW that advertisements support the BCB Web site. I'm in full support of that model for keeping the site free, but I find that the Special K ad in general is insidious and intrusive.

This has nothing to do with BCB--Denise probably uses an ad service that serves up ads she has no control over, which is why you will occasionally see ads for Atkins. That doesn't bother me...bandwidth costs money and she is providing a great service to us all and has to find a way to pay for it.

This is all about the companies that choose to be intrusive in their advertising methods. I don't mind the banner ads at the top of the page, but when companies such as Kelloggs are actively trying to find ways to move beyond the popup blockers that people install specifically to AVOID having things fly into their face, well, it's just plain bad business. There are MANY other ways to market to consumers.

And I'm in marketing, btw, so I know better than most that the way to win customers over is not to annoy them.

So the answer here is to let Kelloggs know that their advertising model is ticking consumers off rather than enticing them. I've seriously decided to boycott them as a result of my extreme irritation--every other time I open a post on BCB it pops up (and I have TWO pop-up blockers in place), especially irritating when I'm at work or when I've already started typing a post or reply.

I wrote a letter to Kelloggs and they do listen. I recommend that if you are frustrated, like me, that you let them know. Go to www.kelloggs.com, (http://www.kelloggs.com,) click on contact us and then follow the form needed in "Do you have a question." I wrote and received the following response:

Crystal,

Thanks for contacting us on-line about the pop-up advertisements on your
computer. Pop-up advertisements are placed on websites and chosen to
reach a specific audience who may be interested in our products and
promotions.

We apologize these advertisements are frustrating to you and will share
your views with those developing and placing our advertisements. We
appreciate you taking the time to email us and for your interest in our
company.

So instead of complaining, take action! Companies really aren't in the market of upsetting people...they want to build a positive brand rather than a negative one, so if you feel strongly, you just need to speak up.

I agree with you about the Kellogg Pop Up and just send this note to the Kellogg web site:

I visit a web site each day, Bootcamp Buddies, and your pop up ad for Special K is very annoying because it keeps popping up while I am either reading a message or trying to type a reply. This campaign has made me STOP buying your product because it is so annoying

FYI I don't think the pop Special K ad is actually attached to an ad package here. I get it on other sites so it is probably from spyware on your computer. I know when I ran my spyware software the add quit appearing. Personally I don't mind as it takes 1 click and it is away.

I just sent a note as well. graemlins/bcbsalute.gif

I don't think it is from spyware--it is there even when my spyware detector has deleted all spyware. I usually just click on it and x it right out, which takes less time than letting it do its thing--but I agree--this is so annoying that it makes me NOT want to ever buy the stuff--

It's not spyware...they just have the ad running on different sites, not just BCB. I have a firewall and I run two different spyware programs twice a week so I'm positive that's not the case.

The way advertising works on various sites is that the site owners usually become part of an advertising program, which chooses to serve up ads based upon the users that go there. The site owner rarely has control over those ads. The advertiser buys into that same advertising program, which serves up ads on a variety of sites, which means that the Special K ads may show up here and they may show up on other related health/diet sites, depending on the types of industries that the advertiser wants exposure to. The advertiser pays per impression (how many times the ad is shown) or in some cases on click-through.

Besides, I've seen countless threads and comments about this ad popping up when BCB members are trying to reply to notes (it just popped up again in the middle of writing this one), so unless all of us are infected with spyware, that's doubtful.

Norton Internet Security blocks it at home, but at work I run 2 spyware programs and a pop-up stopper and it still comes up.

FWIW,
Cathy

This one is extremely annoying to me too. It pops up at the most inconvienent times. It gets through my pop up blocker and I run spybot twice a week to get rid of spyware, and it still comes through. It's not just from this site though, I get it on other sites as well.

To me, these things are like phone solicitors. I don't buy any product from companies that chose to get their message across through the phone or computer.

Well, I was just trying to post on another board and it popped-up and all the words I was typing dissappeared. I was sooo mad. I agree that they are as bad as telemarketers. The problem is I have Special K vanilla almond in my cabinette. lol Should I send them back? lol

I so agree that the ad is extremely annoying and now when I see Spec K I don't buy it because I'm reminded of that stupid ad! I think they are doing themselves more harm than good.

I agree that I find it so frustrating the way that they do it. Not that its done in the first place. I get a million new pages opened here at BCB which I don't get many otherplaces -- those aren't as intrusive.

I will send an email myself.

FYI, I switched browsers and now am no longer bothered by Kay. I use Mozilla (at www.mozilla.com) (http://www.mozilla.com) instead of Internet Explorer (I got the idea from NancyNY), and it is SO much nicer than IE. It's free, and comes with its own built-in pop-up stopper, and also blocks crawling ads like Kay. It has some other nice features as well. I dislike Microsoft anyway, so I'm always happy to have a chance to help out a competitor.

I'll repeat what I posted on a similar thread about "Kay". Netscape 7.1 has a built in popup blocker and I don't see Kay at all! Or any other popups for that matter.....

I saw on Netscape's main page that they have the popup blocker for those using IE for those that are interested.

But I happen to much prefer Netscape and "bug free" browsing.....

Never heard of Mozilla, I'm off to check it out!

I have never even seen the Special K ad. Guess I have good pop-up protection. LOL.

I sent a note too and got the standard reply. While switching browsers can help, I unfortunately, have too many web-based programs here at the UO that are designed to run on IE, so I'd just have to load another browser on and switch back and forth, and that gets tiresome -- even though I admit that I get weary of Microsoft at times! I really think that Kelloggs should know that these ads are intrusive and obnoxious. Popups are one thing, but the sort that come on when you start typing and are all over you like a bad suit have got to go! tongue.gif Denise has no control over these, so we need to let Kelloggs know that the ads are the pits. I happen to like Special K cereal, but will I be buying it anymore? NO WAY!!!

That said, I love Special K Red Berries and will continue to buy the product (it is my favorite cereal.) I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't find the pop-up such a big problem and I'm willing to "endure" the inconvenience b/c it helps pay for the site.

I have gotten the new AOL 9.0 and so far it has been blocking all the pop-ups smile.gif I haven't seen the Kelloggs yet. That one is the most annoying ad and I probably will write them too!
