I have a question for all you buddies ..... my fiance and I just bought a house that has one full bath. When we looked at the house originally, I thought the tub needed to be replaced because it had this rusty area around the metal "handle" in it. This tub is a one piece fiberglass tub/shower surround. After getting possession and doing a deep cleaning (and finding finances for replacement are non-existent -- we bought house "as is" for a steal) the tub/shower is in very good condition -- it just hadn't been cleaned in 20 years!! The "rusty" area was soap scum build up where they must have stored their soap. I have tried several things to get the layer of scum off the shower and nothing seems to be getting down to the root of it. I've scraped, getting the "thick" stuff off, but now am down to thin layer on the entire area.
Here's my question......
Any of you know of any tried and true methods to remove this??
Any help would be appreciated (besides taking a sledge hammer to it)!!

Couple of things I can suggest. You can try CLR (stands for Calcium Lime Rust), which can be found in most grocery stores. I use it to clean out the works on our jetted tub. I pour in most of the bottle, fill the rest of the tub with water and then turn the jets on for a while. Some people swear by the stuff. Another method that might work is to lay or drape a cleaning cloth of some kind over the area, then pour liquid bleach on the cloth to soak it and leave it to sit on the area for a couple of hours. On the other hand, my mother used to swear by plain white vinegar. If you heat it up, it gets quite potent and she used it to clean the buildup around the taps all the time. I know I use it in the kitchen to clean any pot that has stuff stuck in the bottom of it. Lastly Tilex is also pretty powerful, but be warned that you need to have the room very well ventilated to use it because the fumes are enough to knock you out.
Maybe someone else will have had the same problem and can come up with a solution.

I don't think this would be enough to clean this particular problem up, but I'm wild about those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for other types of cleaning. I can't believe how good a job these things do on some things I thought I'd be scrubbing forever. I've used CLR for getting those hard water crystals off taps, etc. and been happy with the results.
