Hi all I live in Shelby County Kentucky, and 30 years ago today was the biggest rash of tornados in the nation. I want to hear your story of that day.
Mine is not too bad is as follows:
My daughter, son, friend & I were down town Louisville. We were looking a wallpaper for Pat's new house. The door opened and this lady came in out of breath. "There are boards and stuff flying around on I-64" She came in as the tornado just went by, we were then out the door heading home. We followed it all the way. Pat was driving, and we had husbands in bed at home and worried they were not there, fearing the worse. She came up on the tunnel at Grindstead road and cars were stopped dead in the road. Looking to the right the park which had once had a forest of trees were all laying on the sides. The live wire that stopped traffic was across the road, but Pat said I think can drive down the fire lane and sneak under the wire. I didn't know if she could, but it was her car. We made it and before we got to the end of the tunnel she was like going 120 mph, she said"Not one cop will worry about us too busy with this mess" She was right no one even came after us and we saw many cops. We got home and our homes were not touched, but many were and my daughter who was home with sleeping Daddy. Well she said went to neighbors house saw the cloud above her going in a circle but high up over her head. In other words that thing was above her and could have touched down at any moment. Asked her why didn't wake Daddy? She said "He would get mad if I woke him up" Normal times that would have been true she was only 11 at that time yet didn't understand that time would have been ok. lol Well now All three of my children are adults and have kids of their own, they remember that day, but Billy doesn't he was only 18 months old.
What a night that was too, my husband went to work we were watching tv reports all day and night, I was so tired, but afraid to sleep. He went to work said go to bed I will call you for any alerts. We all piled in my bed dog and all. I kept the radio on and every time that sound of warnings came on I was awake and scared to death. The destruction was massive they said there were over 200 that day and Ky was hit the hardest. So many died, and some lost homes and all they had, it was just horriable.
So there is my story does anyone else have one?
