Hi buddies graemlins/wave.gif ,

I want to start dying my hair at home, to cover up the pesky gray that's trying to take over of course

The $60 or $70 charged by the salon is a bit much to shell out every 6 weeks or so.

What do you use and why? Do the brands differ much? Any particular brand leave your hair soft and shiny?

Thank You,
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

I've tried a few different ones and my current favorite is "Feria"- as long as you don't have a lot of gray to cover. It works well for less than 40% gray- the color is nice and my hair is soft. I've tried Nice & Easy (faded quickly), Preference (dried out my hair), Open (not intense enough), Herbal Essence (really smelly)... I don't think that any of them are really a lot better than the others! I would suggest you try one that's on sale! Just keep a list of the types you've tried along with your feedback so you don't purchase something that didn't work well the first time.

Good luck-

Debbie

I LOVE Feria! It is my absolute fav, and I ahve tried quite a few. It lasts longer, the color is always shiny, and my hair feels softer after I dye it. I highly recommend it! I like some of hte colors Hydrience makes, but they fade after just a few weeks.

smile.gif let us know how it turns out!

:D I still use Clairol Summer Blonde... I've been using it for over 30 years ;) and if they ever take it off the market I'm in big trouble!!! So far its doing a pretty good job of hiding the ever increasing  number of grey ones!!

Thanks for your helpful replies buddies smile.gif

I think I may try the feria color. Is it available most places - Walmart, K-mart, Walgreens, etc?

Thanks,
Sheryl

Hi all, I have always used Hydrience, but have been using Feria,it doesn't dry out your hair. Last week I couldn't find either in our local store, so I tried Herbal Essence and WOW, graemlins/crazy.gif is this color BRIGHT! Never again,I will wait untill I find my usual color..KimR :D Thank goodness my hubby is very color blind... :D He just thinks it's darker than usual... :D

I like L'Oreal Excellence or Preference. Lately, I've been trying to decide whether to stop coloring my hair all together and just let it be it's natural white - but I'm sure it will make me look much older, and I'm old enough as it is.

I like Garnier - It seems to leave my hair soft and a nice color - I use the gingerale color. Everything else I tried turned brassy - ICK!

I go to the hairdresser and have highlights put in - they don't need touchups near as often (I go about 4x/yr) and give a more natural look to my hair. I have NO idea how much gray I have now. I did try coloring my own hair a few years back and was just never as happy with the results. Sheila

I use Clairol Natural Instincts. I have brown hair and want to color the gray as blonde highlights - so I want to use a blonde color but not bleach my hair. I have worked down from medium brown to medium golden blonde. Eventually I will want to switch to a temporary color until the highlights all grow out, then I will be salt and pepper. I think I am now over 50% gray.

Haven't tried it yet, but I will soon if I can find it around here. To tell the truth, I'm a little nervous about coloring my own hair, as my hairdresser is my neighbor, wallking buddy, fellow ww, and good friend :( . She's been doing my hair a couple years now

At times I wish she didn't do my hair, I feel I need a change but I don't want to hurt her feelings. I feel a bit stuck :(

I use Revlon High Deminsion. I love it! You only leave it on for 10 minutes and my hair always feels wonderful afterwards. I've tried the Feria and didn't care for it at all. Every time I would wash my hair after using the Feria you could see a little of the color washing down the drain. Didn't last anytime. I guess it's different for everyone.

My hair is completely gray and actually it's a "nice" gray. However, once spring comes I go to the salon and get streaks - costs about $54 here.

It's never just the colour I want it to be though.

I use Clairol products at home, but they are just rinses and don't last long.

I'd leave my hair gray if I wasn't looking for another job and want to keep "younger" (for now).

I have a lot of gray and use L'Oreal Preference or Excellence #6A - Light Ash Brown. My DD does the roots only, and I let it set for about 25 minutes, then blend the dye into the rest of my hair for the last 10 minutes or so. That way I don't get the darker-hair-at-the-ends thing going on. Hate to see that! If you use the conditioner in the box, your hair will feel soft and silky.

Good luck!

DD works with a woman from another country & has black, black hair. She likes red,so puts red dye on it & leaves on over night! It's a wonder it doesn't all fall out...& maybe it will.Even with that, her hair is kind of a rusty black shade.

Hi,
I really like Feria by L'Oreal.
My hair tends to get quite dry, but it doesn't get too bad with this stuff. Also, the colour stays great and longer. I usually go fairly blonde and other products make it look brassy and gross after about a month.

I have dyed my hair for years. I am in love with Natural Instincts. Not really harsh on the hair and you get to keep your natural color and add a zing to it. Really shiny and healthy hair.
