I'm mostly just a lerker around here. I'm 28 days quit. I've been staying OP although eating high range, and I'm gaining. (2.5lbs in last week)
Is this a normal thing? I wasn't expecting to loose while I tried to quit but I thought I would at least be able to maintain. It's disappointing and very frustrating. I've gained over 5lbs since the first of the year.
How did/are all of you dealing with your weight and not smoking?

Hi and Congratulations!

I'm at <<One month, three days, 7 hours, 36 minutes and 0 seconds. 686 cigarettes not smoked, saving $145.85. Life saved: 2 days, 9 hours, 10 minutes.>> and doing pretty good. I have gone up and down with the same 3 lbs since I quit. I was down 2, then up 3, then down 1 and so on.... I'm still fighting it and I think it's due to not smoking. It's my first plateau and I'm stuck! Grr!

Have you tried the Fast Track menu? That's what I am going to try starting today or tomorrow. Keep in touch here and we can support each other ;)

Hang in there cause it's so much healthier to be a 5 lb heavier non smoker than a 5 lb less smoker~

Congratulations on your quit. Please don't get discouraged. Your body is going thru a lot of changes right now. The way I kept from gaining weight was to walk. I must admit that I never exercised before quitting smoking. When I quit I started to walk every time I wanted a cig. I started just walking around the outside of the house. Then cold weather set in. My sister gave me a used treadmill and the rest is history. I rode every time the urge was bad. I especially walked after meals. Sometimes I would walk for 10 min. and sometimes longer. I now really love walking. In the summer I walk outdoors and well as on the treadmill. I was walking between 6 and 8 miles a day. Then I started having some back problems and slowed my exercise routine down. The holidays came and I thought I could eat the way I was when I exercised. Wrong! I gained 7 pounds. I re-focused on the 2nd of January and am happy to say that I am now back at my personal goal. I have not had one bite of a sweet since. Once I can walk a lot again I will treat myself to that one piece of choc. I so love.

The important thing is to increase your exercise, drink all the water, and keep point free snacks on hand. I also used a cut up straw to chew on instead of food.

Hang in there, you will make it and you will start loseing your weight again. For now work on the quit and do the best you can.

Hugs,
Clara

Becky--
Some weight gain is normal-as it was said, your body is going through alot of changes. You have gotten through the hardest part of quitting-getting up the courage to do it.

I quit on 5/31/03, a little over 2 mos. before my wedding. I gained about 5# before the wedding, and a total of 13. When I was ready to recommit to WW (when my pants were getting too tight, I must admit!) I did. I am down about 6.5 lbs.
I was scared to death that I was going to gain 40 lbs like my sister did when she quit smoking. But, I made smart eating choices...to a certain extent.

I kept telling myself that I would rather have a few extra lbs and more years on my life than a bad case of lung cancer. Once your body adjusts to the change, you will notice all the little things-more energy, not breathing heavy from the stairs.

Keep up the good work, and don't get too discouraged...with smart eating and exercise, you can minimize the weight gain.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I've been really getting down on myself for putting on weight. You all are right. It's better to be a few pounds heavier than to be a smoker.

Hi Becky,
Yep.....I"m at a low point (or should I say "high" point) right now after quitting smoking. I quit 5 weeks ago and have put on 8 lbs....yes you read that right

I am refocusing this week, it took too long to develop my new good habits to let this go to pot!! We can do this together!! I'm getting really frustrated and scared about the weight gain.

Have a great week!!
