View Full Version : Scared to quit
Thinking Thin

I know that I have to give up my cigarettes. They are a contradiction of what I believe in doing to myself. But, I'm afraid of the weight gain, not to mention the nasties that go along with the quit. I should just set a date and stick with it.
How did you all manage it?

Hi Sharon:
Yes, we all know cig. aren't good for us. The best way to quit is to never smoke again (duh). But, to make sure your quit works, you need to be really prepared mentally. Get on all the quit smoking sites that you can find. Read and get ready for the big day. I smoked for 41 years and knew the time was right for me. I wore the step two patch for two weeks and the final patch for one week. I still had withdrawal, but I knew that I absolutely couldn't smoke. I finally, after the third day, without the patch, thought I would live. Yes, it is hard, but it is doable if you have your mind set and are prepared. I also told everyone I could think of that I was going to quit. I bought plenty of sugar-free hard candy and gum. Every time I wanted a cig. I would walk. Even if it was a walk around the outside of the house. I finally got a treadmill and walked it everytime I wanted a cig. I also told myseslf that if I really wanted a cig. this bad tomorrow, that I would have it. Of course you must tell yourself that everyday. It has been two years for me now and I am below my WW goal and at my personal goal. Yes, I did gain from time to time, but each time I would work hard and take it off. Of course you have to realize that I put weight back on before quiting. This BCB is a God sent. If you stay focused and positive you will succeed.
Good luck to you and come here and post and we will try to help you. Also get on the quitnet.com Site.

Sharon-I agree that preparing yourself mentally is one of the most important things.
We (DH then fiance) and I set a quit date. He decided to do it cold turkey, after seeing the price of the NRT's. I decided that I would wean myself down, starting from mid-month on. Each day I would allow myself one less smoke, till I got to only one on the last day. I also talked to my dr. and got samples of Wellbutrin. I took one a day for about 2 weeks before and one week after. I chewed so much gum that my jaw was popping and hurting when I tried to chew or eat!
Every day that went by, it got easier. It was a struggle for the first three weeks, but after that, it wasn't so bad.
Its been almost 8 months (February 1) and I still get cravings-they are realated to a stressor or something triggers it. I just tell myself "no" and don't give in. I also know that DH would be very disappointed in me.
I think that going w/o things like the gum or patches is the way to go, at least for me, because the goal is to get the nicotine out of your system, right? I think that by weaning myself off of them I did the same thing as the NRT's do.
Good luck. You will be so thankful when you're done, you won't even be able to fathom why you did it to yourself!

Hi Sharon,
You've come to the right place......I was scared to pieces to quit, didn't know if I would even be the same person w/out cigarettes. If smoking were harmless I'd do it forever BUT we all know that's not the case......so ....after smoking for 20 years 1.5-2 packs I quit. I took Wellbutrin for 2 weeks that helped tremendously but made me feel a little weird. I quit cold turkey, after 72 hours the nicotine is out of your system and the healing begins.
The absolute saving grace for me was
