Hi everyone,
On Thursday, a dear friend of ours gave birth to her son, Rhys. It was an emergency c-section, after she felt that he wasn't moving. Doctors discovered that he had received the equivalent of a blow to the head (they think it may have been due to contractions but aren't sure exactly what caused it) and that his brain had swollen on one side. He had also inhaled meconium (sp?).
He was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto, where he has been for the last few days. He seemed to be improving - they reduced the amount of oxygen he was on, and the swelling was beginning to go down, and he has not developed any infections due to the meconium. However, today his heart rate dropped quite a bit and refused to go back up. Tomorrow he has a cat scan.
Rhys' parents are such wonderful people; I have worked with his dad, Tim, for the last several years (he's a fellow teacher). We have happily shared in Emma's pregnancy and have been eagerly awaiting Rhys' arrival right alongside them (in fact, we have all been joking about arranging a marriage between Rhys and our daughter Rachel). I know that their hearts are aching tonight, and that they are scared. Rhys is their first, much-wanted child.
Prayers are needed urgently for Rhys and for his parents. If you have a moment to pray for this little boy to turn the corner and begin to get better, I know that it would make a difference. Thank you in advance!
