My mom gave me a book a year or so ago that I ended up putting on the shelf without really looking through it. Today when looking for a recipe, I came across it again and started looking through it. It's called Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss. It's been out for awhile so forgive me if I'm late on this recommend.

But WOW! This is SUCH a fabulous book! It is full of pictures of different types of foods, so you can see portion sizes, so you can see comparisons. For example, 3 oz of apple chips are 460 calories which equals 4 apples at 320 calories AND 4 large pretzel rods at 140 calories.

The idea behind his book is that you are able to understand how to make healthy choices based on portion size, calories, fiber and fat.

Another example: One 7 3/4 oz scone is 700 calories, which equals:
1 1/2 oz oatmeal with peaches 170 calories
english muffin with jam 150 calories
bowl of cherries at 80 calories
corn flakes with bananas 160 calories
2 slices of light toast with marmalade 100 calories
and a cup of cut up oranges and pineapple at 40 calories.

Imagine!!

Sometimes an equal portion equates into different calories though. A cup of coleslaw is 150 calories, potato salad is 300 calories and pasta salad is 400 calories.

Or a fiber comparison-- 1.5 cups chicken noodle soup is 150 calories and no fiber but 1.5 cups of minestrone is 110 calories and 10 grams of fiber.

It's a really eye opening book, filled with really sound facts about food. Every page has comparison pictures that help you make smarter choices about food in general. He even goes through restaraunt menus and helps you figure out which items are going to be the best bang for your nutritional buck.

In looking at Shapiro's philosophy about food, it's entirely doable in conjunction with WW. He is an advocate for understanding how to make healthy choices about food...knowing about portions, calorie, fiber and fat intake and understanding. It's not a diet book--it's a book about healthy eating.

It's just a really cool, very sound look at making better choices. Thought it would be a great recommend for this group of Super Healthy Eaters!

I've got it, Crystal...and I remember being "astounded" by the visuals when I first got it! graemlins/thumbup.gif

I think I'll pull it out and take another look! :D

Maybe you can find it in your libraries, Buddies. It's a great book to pick up and look at!

I read the book at Chapters one afternoon, and was mind-blown at how the lower-calorie/lower-point choices stacked up against their less-healthy counterparts. Amazing how we could eat a scone without thinking, but just try to chow down on the caloric equivalent in "real food"!
