Oprah had a great show today about real age and aging and taking care of the inside of your body so the outside reflects that care. Anyway, she had Dr. Pratt, author of Super Foods, on as well and he suggests these foods for everyone, all the time-
Orange peppers
Watermelon
Apples (eat the skin)
Pumpkin
Berries-all good, blue the best
Green or Black tea
Tomatoes, raw and as a paste, sauce, etc
Beans
Brocolli
Brocolli sprouts
Whole grains
Oranges
Wild salmon-canned is fine, label will say 'wild'
Soy
Spinach + all dark leafies (swiss chard, kale, etc)
Nuts-1 handful (?) per day
Foods to avoid/eliminate/fear
Sugar-enemy number one
White flour
White rice
White pasta
Whole milk
Popcorn at the movie theatre ( :( )
Processed foods-too much junk in them
Pasteries, sugary sweets
I'm buying this guys' book!
He said something about the more colorful your diet, the more it will show on your skin.
My skin is white, blochy and pasty! Well, I'm working on it but at my age, my skin may already be shot. graemlins/ugh.gif
It seems everyone is talking about super foods. I love this, it's so interesting!

YAY! I've read about the Super Foods and I try to get in most of those daily or at least 4-5 times per week. I do eat the handful of nuts everyday, buy cut-up watermelon several times a week, eat lots of dark green veggies (I put 'em in everything!), & do the rest of all those things on his list. Other super foods I've read about are:
garlic
corn
almonds, specifically
flax, esp for women
yogurt
After going months eating all these super foods, I firmly believe that, in combination with losing so much weight, was why my bloodwork/cholesterol was "the best cholesterol count I've ever seen!" acc to my Doc! graemlins/thumbup.gif

The newest WW magazine has an long article about super foods. I've also read about all the foods SSKatie posted. My husband is not too keen on my breath when I eat garlic but since he has a cold, I piled it on my mongolian grill yesterday and this is the first time he did not say, "What have you been eating?" My reply is always, "I brushed my teeth, used mouthwash and ate a mint!"
His reply, "Try again, stinky".

Yay for superfood! I also want to recommend a book called Super Foods Rx: 14 Foods That Will Change Your Life (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060535679/qid=1077214594//ref=pd_ka_1/104-2929041-1763940?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) by Pratt and Matthews.
I am trying harder than ever to get the good foods in, and it is amazingly easy now that I've cut the junk. A handful of nuts can easily be fit into points when I'm not eating candy bar after candy bar! odear.gif smile.gif
TJ'sMom - Do you know what the rationale behind avoiding whole milk is? I ask because I eat whole milk yogurt now; the rest of my dairy is low-fat.

I also already eat a lot of the super foods, but am going to try to get some of the others in too.

Saw the show and LOVED it! :D
Berries are BRAIN-FOOD, and he calls blueberries, "Brain-berries"! I love them frozen, and since I didn't freeze any this year I can get them from a local farm (where THEY remembered to freeze them... ;) )
TJ'sMom~ He acted as if the foods will help your skin from the-inside-out! I don't think it's ever too late! graemlins/bcbsalute.gif And tell your DH to eat garlic WITH you! He'll get "healthier" and neither one of you will be stinkyto the other. graemlins/kiss.gif

Thanks, Carole. At the most I eat a 1/2 cup of whole milk yogurt every other day so I should be safe. smile.gif All of the other dairy products that I consume are lower fat.

Yup, love those superfoods! I eat a lot of them but I'm looking to improve. :D
Speaking of superfoods, I just wanted to share that I'm trying something new today...roasted chili edamame, which I found a recipe for in Cooking Light. I'm going on a road trip later tonight and thought this would be a delicious, nutritious soy snack as opposed to the low-point baked chips I usually take.
I'll post the recipe if they turn out well!

I don't know if this is the reason, Paris, for his not recommending "whole milk" but I just read this in Harvard's Healthy Food Pyramid:
Dairy products have traditionally been Americans' main source of calcium. But there are other healthy ways to get calcium than from milk and cheese, which can contain a lot of saturated fat. Three glasses of whole milk, for example, contains as much saturated fat as 13 strips of cooked bacon. If you enjoy dairy foods, try to stick with no-fat or low-fat products. Katie~ I LOVE to sit with a cup of frozen blueberries and "snack"! Little round dessert treats~

This is a good older thread, listing the Super Foods that I generally eat - I thought I'd bump it back to the top, and ask if anyone has a recipe for Swiss Chard they would share - I love chard, but generally just brown some onion in a bit of olive oil, add to the chard, and cook 'til tender.

Hey Crystal,
I recently got stuck with the wrong bag of groceries at Trader Joe's and ended up with a huge bag of "Chard of all Colors." I cooked it my usual way (same as you, except with LOTS of garlic added) and my roommate recommended adding either golden raisins, walnuts (tried this, it was really good), lemon, or turkey bacon. Last night I put the leftovers on a baked potato and it was awesome.
I have a hard time remembering which specific foods are "superfoods" but what most of them have in common is that they contain healthy fats (such as salmon and nuts) or are colorful produce (berries, red peppers, dark greens, etc.) So I just try to go for color!

Question: I love broccoli and cauliflower, but cauliflower a little more. Do you think that this is just as good as broccoli? It isn't listed on your superfoods list.
Thanks!

Broccoli has the color in its favor - color = more vitamins. Cauliflower is definitely good for you, though!
