I got this recipe off the food network site, from the Cooking Thin show. Posted it on the lifers board and someone said that they made it and it turned out really good. She says this one is a keeper and that she worked out points to about 1 point per burger. I'm anxious to make it, but haven't found bulgur yet. Enjoy.
Garden Burgers
1/2 large onion, finely diced
1 1/4 cup vegetable or chicken stock
1 cup coarse bulgur
1 (15 oz) can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
4 oz frozen peas or carrots, Optional
pinch kosher salt
1/4 cup grated mozzarella (optional)
Pour onions into a 3 quart sauce pot with the stock and bring to a boil. Add bulgur, chickpeas and veggies, stir until combined. Turn off heat, cover and let stand 15 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed.
Remove pot from heat. Using a potato masher or spoon back, mash ingredients together making sure all chickpeas get smashed. Add in cheese (if desired). Form into four burger patties. Lightly coat a non stick skillet with cooking spray and turn heat to medium. Place all burgers in pan when hot and cook 2-3 minutes per side or untilheated through and golden. Can also add taco or other seasoning into burgers mixing them.
No nutritional info was given, but should be able to figure points easily enough. This isn't that many ingredients.

I saw that show. I love the Cooking Thin show. I was so proud to see her use Bulgur and that the teenager on the show really liked it!!

ACK!!!!! My Mastercook is saying that this comes out to 10.7 Points per burger!!!! And that's without the peas or carrots!!!
Do you use cooked or dry bulgur...not that it matters! It still comes out to 9.0 Points using cooked bulgur. What am I doing wrong?????

A newbie here. I recall seeing that episode, too. Is there a chance that the optional cheese is making the points higher?
Btw, just wondering...What is Mastercook? It's sounds like something I might be interesed in.
Thanks,
Middie

This sounds like it should make more than 4 burgers. That's a lot of "stuff" going into that recipe! Sounds yummy. I just had a store bought garden burger for dinner with sauteed onions and BBQ sauce. My husband had the grilled chikin (garden burger product) and my daughter had the "fried" chikin patty (morning star product). they will occasionally join me in a veg. meal!

I got SEVEN regular sized burgers! See below:
"Garden Burgers: Servings: 7 burgers, 4 oz. each
1/2 large onion, finely diced
1 1/4 cup vegetable or chicken stock

(I've got people working on the points right now! ) I made mine with: precooked bulgar (2 cups), onions, frozen garbanzo beans and frozen peas: mixed together and cooked in the microwave for about 3 minutes until beans/peas were warm and onion was cooked.
You can also follow the recipe by putting everything in an 8 C. Pyrex measuring cup and microwaving the mixture for 15-20 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes. I did add in the grated mozarella when I "mashed" the mixture!
I formed them into "burgers" with my Tupperware patty-maker. They held their shape beautifully, and were very easy to work with! I got seven 4 ounce "Gardenburgers".
I toasted a pita, and put it in with lettuce, tomatoes and hot sauce. Very filling and delicious. Reminiscent of a falafel!! Carol
P.S.I did try my hand at Mastercook and got "2" points each (however it goes to "3" if you use "cooked garbanzo beans" instead of "canned garbanzo beans"! )
P.S.S. The second time I FORGOT the mozarella cheese  and it wasn't nearly as good! The cheese acts as a binder, and is "wonderful" for the flavor, too~ smile.gif

So funny that I should see this recipe! I just found a copycat recipe for the original gardenburger! I haven't made it yet, but thought I would post it here as well, in case anyone is interested!
The original Gardenburger
Makes 6 veggie patties
2 tablespoons bulgur wheat
1 pound mushrooms, quartered (4 cups steamed)
1 cup diced onion (1/2 cup steamed)
1/2 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup cooked brown rice
1/2 cup shredded low-fat mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons shredded low-fat cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons low-fat cottage cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Dash pepper
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Olive oil cooking spray
1) Add 1/4 cup boiling water to the bulgur wheat in a small bowl and let it sit or about 60 minutes. The wheat will swell to about double in size.
2) Steam the quartered mushrooms for 10 minutes or until tender; then remove them from your steamer; and replace with the onion. Steam the diced onion for 10 minutes or until the pieces are translucent. Keep these two ingredients separate, and set aside.
3) Add 1/2 cup of water to the oats and let them soak for about 10 minutes, until soft.
4) Drain any excess water from the bulgur wheat and oats then combine the grains with the steamed mushrooms, rice, cheeses, and spices in a food processor and pulse 4 or 5 times until ingredients are chopped fine, but not pureed. You want a coarse texture with some identifiable chunks of grain, mushroom, and cheese.
5) Pour the mixture into a bowl with the steamed onion and cornstarch, and mix well.
6) Preheat the oven to 300 degrees and set a large skillet over medium/low heat.
7) Spray the skillet with a light coating of olive oil cooking spray Measure 1/2 cup at a time of the patty mixture into the pan and shape with a spoon into a 3 3/4-inch patty that is approximately 1/2-inch thick. Cook the patties in batches for 2 to 4 minutes per side, or until light brown on the surface.
8) When all of the patties have been cooked in the skillet, arrange them on a lightly sprayed baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the oven. Be sure to turn them over halfway through the cooking time. You can serve the patties immediately or freeze them, like the original, when they have cooled.
9) If you freeze the patties, you can reheat them several ways. Simply spray a light coating of olive oil cooking spray on each side and heat each patty in a pan over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until it is hot in the center: You can also use a grill to prepare the patties. Just be sure to spray each frozen patty with the oil, and be sure the flames are low. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Those are the best cooking methods; however; you can also prepare a frozen patty by microwaving it for 30 to 35 seconds, then turning the patty over and zapping it for another 30 to 35 seconds. Finally, you can heat a frozen patty in the microwave for 30 to 35 seconds, then place the partially defrosted patty in a toaster or toaster oven and cook it on medium heat until it's hot in the center.
Tidbits
If your food processor is too small to hold all of the ingredients, simply divide the ingredients and process one half at a time, or cut the recipe in half Bulgur wheat can be found in most health food stores, and even some supermarkets carry it.

I figured the points for each item on this recipe(since they didn't list fiber) and it works out to 18 points for 6 burgers which would be 3 points each! Let me know if anyone tries this before I do!

Why don't you also post this on the Recipe Forum under "Vegetarian" recipes~ I'm sure people would appreciate it, and it would be easy to find in the future.

Pulling this up! Make this Core by eliminating the cheese, using FF mozarella, or...count the cheese! :bcbsalute

I'm a big Morning star user and have been for years. Have you or anyone else on here ever tried their crumbles? You can make about anything with those..I love them.
