I also posted this in the OT forum, but thought I might have more luck here.

I need to buy a Christmas gift for a one year old baby girl, but am not sure what would be a good idea.

I'd like to get something inexpensive, useful and a nice surprise to the parents (I'd rather not have to ask them directly what to get).

Any ideas on what I should or definitely should not get?

Thanks,
ChemLisa

I have a friend with a child that just turned 1. Her favorite toys are ones with buttons that talk when you push them - like car console toys, cell phones, etc. She also has a toy that is a plush barn with plush block animals. The animals are triangle, square, circle, and rectangle shaped and one squeaks, one crinkles when you touch it, one rattles, and the other does something else. The barn has holes that fit these blocks. She loves it.

And if you want to have a gift the parents will enjoy give them babysitting coupons for free nights out. smile.gif

This will all depend on what your definiton on inexpensive is. I could list a hundred toys but not sure what your price range is. I bought my 15 month old a big wheel that has a handle i the back so I can push her if she does not gethow to pedal. This was only 20 dollars. I also got her an Elmo cell phone for less than 10. My cousin bought her the leap frog table with music and letters and colors but that is more like 50 dollars. This is very useful though. Great gift that is very education while very fun for them. You can go to fisher-price.com or playschool.com and check out age appropiate toys. Good Luck!

I think books make wonderful baby gifts. smile.gif

Most gifts babies receive will be toys & clothes, so as long as you avoid the classics they probably already have, I'm sure you can find something great within your budget. Good luck. graemlins/wave.gif

I like books too - that is what I told everyone to get my baby this year - she is too young to look at them herself - but they grow into them! a 1 year old would love some board books or those with plastic pages!

I also asked p[eople to get Zadie children's CDs of music/poetry. Our favorite one that we have gotten so far is "Pat the Bunny" it is GREAT!

As a preschool teacher - I also like the Wiggles, Raffi, Greg and Steve, and the PlaySkool CDs.

Gifts NOT to buy? clothes and diapers. BORING! and the grandmas have pretty much taken care of that anyway!

You might see if she still has a baby registry at babiesrus or target? You can go online and see - then maybe there is something left on the registry to get.

OH - other toys that I LOVE!! ANY, ANY of the FisherPrice Classical Chorus toys! There is a piano, a drum, a ring stacker, a bowl nester thing, and tons of others! GREAT toys! The leapfrog stuff is "ok" but I like the fisherprice better for this age!

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

LOL - true true Lisa - I guess at 7 weeks that hadn't occurred to me! LOL

I have just played with those toys at school - 2.5 hours a day! smile.gif Maybe if I keep them HIGH up in a closet and only bring them down in a controlled manner?! lol

You know - I DO have it coming though! I was the aunt/cousin who always bought the kids fingerpaint/markers/PLAYDOH/loud toys for christmas! hmmmmm - maybe I should have thought about that!

Any arts and crafts supplies are great. Crayons, finger paints. Videas also; kids are in love with the wiggles. Bath toys are another idea, bubble blowers, bubble bath and handy for mon and dad too. Hope that helps.
