If you are a mom to be with company benifits you might want to check this out. I had found out that a new mom can claim disability benifts after the birth of a child. 6 weeks for vag birth 8 weeks for c-section. Disability usually pays more than maternity benifts from unemployment. It will also let you stay at home with babe for 6-8 weeks more.

What harm does checking it out do?

Denise - Thanks! :D I already have disability insurance - and I am SO glad that I went on and bought it a few years back - there is a one year waiting period here for maternity related benefits! I will get ALMOST my take home pay for at least 6 weeks after the baby. That plus my 5 weeks of sick leave that I have accumulated at work will give me almost the 12 weeks that I plan to take off with baby!

It is funny though - I feel fortunate to "be able" to take 12 weeks...while my Canadian friends will get around a year!!! smile.gif

Yep,

I am Canadian, but did not qualify for unemployment because we are business for self.

12 weeks is not a long time I hope things go well for you. Mine is 13 months and I am nowhere near ready to go back to work.

Denise, I just found this out too. Apparently for the first 6 weeks I get part of my pay (90% for 2 weeks, 80% for 2 weeks, and 70% for 2 weeks) and then I go on EI (government paid mat leave). I am one of the lucky ones who gets a year of EI pay (about $400 a week). I am very impressed with the Canadian government on their mat leave policy!

I like the Canadian policy too but we moved here when I was 20wks pregnant and you have to have worked for 26 of the past 52wks to qualify for maternity benefits.

We don't get any benefits because I was a SAHM which I'm not sure I really agree with. I *was* working those 26wks out of 52 (well, all 52wks out of 52) but because I wasn't paid for it, I don't qualify. It's bad enough that SAHMs don't get paid for their job but then the government doesn't give us any benefits because we don't get paid!! graemlins/crazy.gif

Okay, I'm done griping! smile.gif
