How long after a baby is born can the mom still eat the extra 10 nursing points?

As long as you keep losing!!

I joined ww back in 98 when ds #1 was 6 months old. I didn't know about the nursing points in the first week and lost a total of 5.8 pounds. My leader talked to me and said I should add in at least some of the nursing points; so I tried with 5 points (since I was working 4 days per week and he was gettng 24 oz of formula on those 4 days, plus solids). Well I lost 3.2 pounds the next week; so I upped it to 10 points and kept on losing over 2 pounds per week on average.

When my son was 11 months, my weight loss started to stall out (lost less than a pound/wk for 2 weeks); so I decreased my points to 5 extra nursing points. That was for 2 weeks until my son decided to wean cold-turkey; so the following week I stopped using my nursing points.

All told, I lost 52 pounds in the first 24 weeks while following the nursing plan and then the remaining 16 pounds to goal in the following 8 weeks.

Enjoy those extra points for as long as you can!!

Thanks for the response. Wow, you've been really successful - good job!

My baby is older and has been eating solids for awhile, yet I sometimes get hungry without the nursing points. Maybe I'll try to add in a few if I feel hungry but cut them out if I don't lose.

Hi!

I ate 10 nursing points until my DD turned one. Every time I tried to cut my points, I'd maintain. After she turned 1, I cont'd nursing and just added 2-5 points. But I did keep my calcium at 4 servings (tums are great for 0 point calcium that is safe).

Hope this helps!

OH you guys help me!! I was on weight watchers before I conceived and I lost 25 pounds..then got pregnant. Now I have had my son Devin and I went right back on weight watchers. First I ate the 10 breastfeeding points (I am breastfeeding exclusively) for a couple weeks and gained a couple pounds, so I took away 5 points for a week and saw nothing. Now I am eating the regular points and seeing a slowwww loss (which is better than none) But I am starving!!! what do I do? Why isn't this working for me? Last time it worked soooo good for me! Help?? Oh and please go vote for my baby boy, he's in a contest. He's # 13 Devin. You can vote once a day. Thanks Kim smile.gif

Kim,
Are you exercising? I'm nursing twins and my nursing point range is 38-43 points (I know, it's a lot...) Most days I eat around 30-34, but somedays I eat 40 if I'm hungry and they're having a growth spurt.

My weeks so far were -4, -.2, +5.2 (I almost died!), -9 (I knew I wasn't crazy! Started exercising this week),+.6 (that's okay), -1.6 (now we're settling down).

My goal now is one pound a week. Last week I ate my nursing points (We had Pizza Hut Chicken thin crust and veggie thin crust and Taco bell soft tacos and I still lost 1.6!) If I lose over great, but I'm just going to enjoy the ride and not stress. I'm feeding my babies and trying to get healthy. The losses all add up into something glorious. smile.gif

Blessings,
Mary

I am new to both this BCB and weight watchers. I too am breastfeeding. They told me to eat 10 more points too even though my daughter is 9 months old and eats a lot of solids. I only have been on WW for 5 days now. I decided to eat 8 more points rather than 10. I don't really feel like I have lost anything in the 5 days yet. SHould I? I am wondering if any of you guys think maybe I should only be eating 5 extra points? Someone wrote in and advised me to eat the recommended 10 points because when I go to maintain I will have to eat so much less because my body would get used to eating less if I didn't eat the 10 points. I right now am listening to that advise. If I am extremely hungry I eat the 10 extra but I shoot for the 8. How much is the average weight loss for the first week? I am so desperate to loose these extra 30 pounds!!! Any help would be great!!! I go to my 2nd meeting on Wed. Also it seems like all my points are taken up by the time I do my 8 fruits/veggies & 3 t. of oil because of nursing. How does everyone make sure they get their 3 t. of oil every day?

I started WW when my daughter was 5 months old, since then, I have used all 10 nursing points, losing 32 pounds. She's now 11 months old and nursing 1-2 times a day. I'm still using all 10 nursing points and I'm still losing (on weeks I actually count points). You have to find what works for you.

dionysian08- how old is your baby? Is your nursing well established? Are you exercising? Those make a big difference. Are you using your flex points?

KellyAnn- don't get on the scale yet! Just go with the flow and let WW weigh you the first few weeks while your body is getting used to your new way of eating. I'm really bad about getting in my requirements, especially the water, so I don't know what to tell you there.

here's my record. I was still nursing 4-6 times a day in Jan. Beth's been on solids 3 times a day since Nov. I walk 3 miles at least 3 times a week.

Thanks a lot! I am so anxious to put on my jeans and not have to suck it in!!! I haven't weighed myself. I will wait and see on Wednesday to see if the points are working for me!

Id like to chime in. I keep alot of very low point items in the house and when I eat my nursing points, I feel like Im over eating. I think this is mental. Can someone help me here? Im a return WWer, having met goal in Nov 2003 then getting pg in feb04, I had gestational diabetes and gained 68lbs with this pg. My son is 5m and is exclusively BFed other than one small jar of cereal at night. I have not really been using my nursing points and ive used NO flex points either. Im loosing though. Im afraid Im going to jepordize my supply.

Am I just being afraid of my points? My husband does not *believe* in nursing points BAH ON HIM. I guess he doesn't understand that your body works hard to lactate.

I don't have time to respond to everyone right now...but in general...

USE YOUR NURSING POINTS!!! LOL seriously. your body needs something like 500 extra calories to make milk. it is only 300 when you are pregnant! Making milk is hard work!

The recommended rate of weight loss for nursing mothers is 1 pound a week AFTER the first week. And if you are losing MORE than that then you need to increase the points - even if they go over 10.

kim - How old is devin? I have this same problem now that zadie is a toddler. the nursing makes me SOOOO hungry - but she is only at 1-2x a day now and I "know" that that doesn't really "qualify" for 10 points. but i am REALLLLYYYY hungry when i try to eat just the regular points. SO - what i do is start with aiming for the regular points and on the days that i do feel super hungry add foods like ww bread, fruits, milk, or whole grains to fill me up. I figure that at least i am making better choices.

steph and kim ~ i nursed dd#2 until she was 18 months and ate the 10 extra points the whole time - even when she was just nursing once a day at the end - because i was still nursing. at a meeting, my leader said that many moms add 2 nursing points to their target for each nursing session. that wasn't enough for me, but maybe it'll work for you guys.

tiff ~ eat!!!!!!! hate to say it, but your hubby is way off base. making milk requires a lot of extra calories. eat!!!!

Pam- that is great advice. Thank you. I nurse my daughter (who is 9 months) about 4 or 5 times a day. So that is about 8 to 10 points extra which is what I am doing. I think it is enough because I am pretty satisfied as far as hunger. I shoot for 8 but if I am hungry at dinner or whatever I eat 10. I lost 6.4 pounds my first week so I am pretty happy. I hope that my second week is just as good. So far I think my milk supply is still the same but for the first time ever my daughter slept through the night!!!! YEA!!!!! I wonder if maybe the healthier foods settle her tummy more or if maybe there isn't as much milk so she figures why bother getting up? WHo cares- I got a full nights sleep (except my husband's snoring) Ha Ha!
