I know all about tight money but could you afford $13-14 a month for the online program? Other than that you will need to probably pay big bucks for stuff through e-bay. How about signup with W/W for the first week during a free registration time and having the week 1 info?

Really you need more than just the books to do the program.

If you go to the 1st meeting you can buy the books and than just never go back. They have free registration sometimes. Or another option is WW @home. It gives you all the books, pamphlets, journals, and a flex points calculator. It costs I think $99 you can pay all at once or they have a payment plan. It would be cheaper going to one meeting to buy the books but you miss out on all the information from the pamphlets. With the @home plan it gives you all the pamphlets for the first 12 weeks. Or there is always e-bay. Good luck.

I have been doing weight watchers since Jan 8 of 2003 and I haven't spent a dime on anything from weight watchers. I have gleaned everything I need to know from this forum and dottis weight loss zone and other weight watchers sites. I have never attended a meeting, online or in person, or bought a book. Just do research, ask questions, and fill in the rest.

You can also go to a meeting site and buy the food companion or points finder or whatever they call it nowadays, without having to join. (I've spent a fair amount on WW in the past - scale, points books, frozen foods back when they sold them at the centers, and, of course, weekly dues, but haven't bought anything lately except for their cookbooks.)

Hi,
I got lucky and found a friend in a board like this one who bought me the Starter packet and also Explained the whole program to me. She really was a God sent. I am very thankful to her. I hope you find someone similar. I looked on ebay at the Starter kit, they are reasonable, considering it is 20 at the meeting anyway. Plus you have to pay to join. But you will still need someone to explain how many pts your allowed and the Flex Pt part, also somewhere on the board they explain the exercise points too. I would say you could do it on your own, but will need a little help. I am 144 I am allowed 20 pts a day plus 35 flex pts to lose weight. But that differs depending on your weight. Dotties site is another big help w/ points. Check that out too. Thanks good luck!

Hi,

I'm new to this board and to WW. I'm here actually to learn how WW works with the points and all. I don't have the money to invest for a diet I may not like or one that may not work. I've been on Atkins for 4 months and have lost nothing and it's frustrating. Could someone point me to other forums like this or websites that may give me some good information?

Thanks
Kris

Kris,

Foods are given a point value based on calorie, fat and fiber content. Fiber is capped at 4 grams in figuring the points for an individual food. You have a set number of points that you eat based on your current weight. In addition to your daily "target" points you have an additional 35 "flex" points to use throughout the week any way you choose. Also, you earn "activity" points for exercise which you can convert to food points, to be eaten the same day earned.

Since you mention you're looking for info, I assume you have no previous knowledge of the food point values. Here's a formula to help you figure them:

Point = (cal/50)+(fat/12)-(fib/5)

You want to know the point value of 1/4 cup of lowfat ricotta cheese:

60 calories/50 = 1.2
3g fat/12 = .25
0g fib/5 = 0

1.2 + .25 - 0 = 1.45 points or round down to 1 pt.

So here are the Target points based on weight:

less than 150 lbs. - 20 points (per day)
150-174 - 22 pts
175-199 - 24 pts
200-224 - 26 pts
225-249 - 28 pts
250-274 - 30 pts
275-299 - 31 pts
300-324 - 32 pts
325-349 - 33 pts
350 or more - 34 pts

One important thing to remember about Weight Watchers...there are NO forbidden foods!

Hope this helps with your decision. The Plan (http://www.weightwatchers.com/plan/index.aspx)
