I belong, but I didn't join until after I'd reached goal weight. So weight loss has not been my goal. I have lost inches and body fat. However, I will not be renewing when my year's contract is up. I find too many excuses NOT to go. I think it's a great program, but it's not for me. I do better just doing an exercise video in the morning before I get ready for work. But I know there are lots of women who absolutely love Curves.

There are a lot of people who love it - and it does work for a lot of people. I used to belong -there's one about a mile from my house - and I had to pass it on my way home. I enjoyed it at first and was going 3 times a week. Then I just GOT BORED! It was too repetitious for me. I need variety to my exercise and doing the same thing each time just didn't do it for me, so I stopped going about 5 months into my 1 year membership. graemlins/sleep.gif

I've never been to Curves. It opened here last year. However, I phoned them and they are way to expensive for me so I just count on my walking, which I enjoy a lot.

I know people who love Curves, but I found it boring and repetitious and didn't like the music at all so I cancelled my membership as soon as I could. Sheila

Here's a great link that has a review about Curves. I think it pretty much reflects the sentiment of those who already posted.. CURVES REVIEW (http://www.chasefreedom.com/curvesforwomen2.html)

Where I live one just opened up and I was debating about joining. I was told that the women that owns the one in my town is a plus size woman and so was half the clients that went there. I do know it is a gym for just women and the glass is frosted over so no one can see you (thats what I like tongue.gif ) I do know that the location for the one in my town is a bad place...its right next to a Little Ceaser's Pizza place  ....how cruel is that  ...lol

Hi lrussell! I am from Boonville and know of the Curves that you talk about. I was wondering about it myself but thought it was probably way too expensive. But I had to reply because as cruel as the Little Ceaser's being next door to a gym is the fact that our Weight Watchers is next to a chinese restaurant and you have to smell it on your way in!!!

Hi Its only 29 dollars a month very cheap, My weight watchers is by two pizza places, dunkin donuts, and a restaunt. hows that for fun lol

In our area the price is $29 if you have it directly debited from a bank account each month -if you want to pay by cash or check - it's $39. I'm not sure if that's how it is all over but I would suggest you check it out before you join. graemlins/clown.gif

My WW meeting used to be INSIDE a chinese restaurant, in the party room. The meeting was at noon and I always wondered what the lunch customers thought of us. Glad we aren't there anymore.

I've been a Curves member for about 2 1/2 months. Been getting good results, too. It can be a bit dull at times, but not often and it's so quick it doesn't bother me. As long as it keeps working, I'm happy. I realize that when my year is up, I'll probably be ready for a larger facility. Not because I'll hate Curves, but I'll just need more challenges.

As always, onward & downward. graemlins/bcbsalute.gif

Curves opened in my city last yr. I called them for prices. Way too pricey for me.
$199 service fee to join
50% discount - $99.50 if you joined over the phone (without checking them out, etc.)
If you paid 12 mos. it was $39 plus GST.
If you paid month to month it was $49 plus GST. per month.

I'll just stick to my own plan - walking and maybe in the Fall check out the Y for programs.

Hello I also used to belong to curves. It is ok but I did find it boring after a while. Here you pay a membership fee I think it was 69.00 not too sure it was a year ago. But there after it was 29.00 a month if you signed for automatic withdrawl from checking otherwise it was 39.00. If you quit earlier than 1 year you had to pay 10.00 for each month you already went if you had it deducted from your check book. I quit after 6 months so I had to pay 60.00 to quit since I had it automatically deducted. I didn't find it very motivating there either most women were older and it didn't seem like they were there so much for the exercise as the socialization.

Curves? Belonged for 3 months. Boring, but.... I met so many interesting women, that I looked forward to going. I am not attending now. I go to a exercise class and no one can talk during as we are watching and listening to leader's instructions.. Good exercise, but no individual conversations. So, both are good in their own right. Whatever you find fits your personality, then it will work.

Hi, I am Curves member and have been for a little over 4 months. I really enjoy going to Curves, but I have formed my own opinions and beliefs about who it 'works' for. This is just my personal opinion, from observation and participation.

I started Curves in December '02. Prior to Curves, I was not active at all (had not been active for over a year). I found it to be a really good starting point for me. My biggest excuse for not exercising is time. I feel like I've had a good workout after 30 minutes. The time works for me. I am 25 years old, 5'6 and weigh 150 pounds...I don't have a lot to lose. I didn't change my eating habits when I started Curves (I didn't eat poorly, just not WW ;) ) I lost a total of 7 inches in four months, but couldn't really tell from where. As soon as I started WW two weeks ago, I lost 4 pounds right away (with my regular 3-4 workouts at Curves). It has been my observation, that the women who lose at Curves are the women who have a lot to lose. It is a very introductory level exercise program and I think it is wonderful for people who are not currently active or don't have the time for a regular gym.

It is a little pricy and I have started to realize that there are certain muscles that seem to be neglected in the Curves workout. I will likely not renew my membership, and will possibly cancel it before it is through. The diet that Curves promotes is low-carb...very similar to Atkins.

My one piece of advice for Curves members is in regards to your measure day each month. You should try to have the same staff member measure you from month to month. At my location, I find inconsistancies between the women (they don't quite measure at the same spot, or pull the measuring tape as tight or as loose).

Anyway, I do enjoy Curves and I think that if a woman does not have an activity program in place, Curves is a wonderful solution.

Thanks!
Lindsay

I just joined a gym on monday and it was a tossup between Curves and Lucille Roberts.I ended up going to Lucille Roberts, I think you get more for your money.I haven't exercised in a long time and I just took my 2nd class, as well as working with weights and the treadmill and I've never felt as good as I have this past week.Today was my 3rd workout day and I am so sore...good luck to all!!@ ;)

I'm not sure if that's how it is all over but I would suggest you check it out before you join.I am going to be joining the way I look at it is right now being 267 lbs I am not going to feel comfortable at any other gym...so if its slow or borning it will still be better then seeing 120lb women running circles around me and making me not want to come back. I like the fact that its a gym for just women and in my area they are all around my size so this helps. Now if I can just make into the gym and not the Little Ceasers Pizza place next door I will have my first NSV... :D

Hi Irussel5 I just wanted you to know that at my gym 'work out world' there is every shape and size and I have never seen anyone making another person feel uncomfortable. Once you walk in the door and have a nice trainer show you the equipment you get right into it. We are all there for the work out. Try it. Dee

We have a CFW that just opened about 2mi from me. I am going on Wed for a looksee and will post what I find out. I have about 75lbs to lose and I know I will not feel comfortable at any other club. I work out with an elliptical at home, but looking for something to vary it up. Check back on Wed.

I also USED TO go to Curves. I stopped after my membership was up because my particular center enabled too many people to join and there was always a wait for machines. It was ridiculous. When I joined there were 200 people, when I left there were more than 500.

Also, I was seeing very slight results in comparison to what I am getting now from doing The Firm and Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds. I was never sore after Curves (never had a "great" workout) and while I lost a few inches, I wasn't getting defined.

Good luck with your decision.

Ok a few days ago I posted about how I wasn't losing that much weight. I had my weigh and measure today at Curves. In the last month I have lost a whopping 1 pound, 4% body fat, 2 inches off my waist , 1/4 inch off my hips, and 3/4 of an inch off each thigh. That is GREAT! I also did some research and in case you didn't know this you CANT turn fat into muscle that's why when you gain muscle you might weigh more. You still have your fat plus the new muscle you have gained. I never knew this. So according to my Curves leader I have lost 8 pounds of FAT in the last month and gained lean muscle.

I had never heard of Curves until about a week ago, when I read that it's the fastest growing franchise in America. As far as I know, we don't have them in Houston yet... at least the part of the city that I live in.

WOW...I am kinda suprised that so many of you don't care for Curves. I LOVE IT! I had belonged to Gold's for 2 years (going 5 mornings a week) with very little results. I started going to CFW and the clothing sizes are finally going down. So many of you say its not a good work out but I tend to believe its what you put into it. If you go in "bored" and do your time then yeah its boring, but if you go in and "work the machines" and really work at getting your heart rate up then before you know it you've done your 30 minutes and the sweat it flowing. I always leave energized and ready to meet the world! I go at least 3 times a week and sometimes more. The cost is $29 a month which is much less than I was paying Gold's so yeah I'll take CFW any day!

I joined Curves yesterday and went for my first routine today. I really enjoyed it. I felt the burn and worked hard. My arms and thighs are sore now. I can see how once you are fit you would be bored with this program, but for women like me who are NOT fit and dont feel comfortable at other clubs, this program is ideal.

I go to Curves and really enjoy it too. I believe with someone in one of the above posts, who mentioned that it's what you put into it that counts. I see too many women not trying their best while on the machines or talking to their friends while exercising. Myself, I'm not that friendly when I go to Curves! I'm quiet and concentrate on each exercise, visualizing what muscles are being worked.

That said, to be honest it is working for me; I lost seven pounds in the first month effortlessly. But I am over 200 pounds, I was inactive for a long time, and I feel these exercises are perfect for obese people.

When I lose all my weight, I will go back to a real gym (which I went to in my former thin life)...with a real treadmill and real weight machines. Right now I can't handle them, but when the time is right I will.

For us obese folks Curves is a perfect start. For those close to their goal weight or who are already in fairly decent shape...well, you might be disappointed.

I love CFW! I joined one month ago. I will have my measurements and weigh in tomorrow. I love the program. I tend to use the excuse of not having any time to go workout, but with Curves, I haven't found that excuse. It is only 30 minutes. I find myself suprised when I am rounding the end of my circuit. I can hardly believe how quick my workout is. The women who run the facility are fantastic! Full of support and motivation. They keep everyone's spirit up. They go around while everyone is working and they make suggestions to everyone about nutrtion, weight loss, and excercise. They also congratulate everyone on their successes big or small. They also can print out your progress from their computer which I think is great! I do have to agree with some of you that CFW isn't for everyone. For those of us who are just beginning a workout routine or who prefer to workout with other women (especially women who aren't wearing those cute skimpy workout outfits), this is the place!

Wow, it seems like your Curves is run a whole lot better than the one I go.

Here you're lost in the shuffle, after the initial smile from management when you walk through the door, you're forgotten. And one day the manager was particularly obnoxious and even the other patrons overheard her and rolled their eyes. I really chalk it up to her immaturity, and for a brief moment I even wondered if she was on drugs! No one asks about your progress, mentions nutrition, etc.

I really do feel it's due to poor management, and not CURVES persay. I'll finish up my year, as the center is so close to my home, but I honestly don't feel I'll continue my membership. It's helping me now; I am obese and can't move like I did in my thin years. But once this weight is gone I will definitely move onto something else.

I researched Curves and decided that it wasn't for me. I have been working out for years so I know the intensity level would not be up to "my" standards, not to mention that it seems very repititous. I also don't like the idea that you are locked into a contract. But I think that it sounds great for people that have never exercised before of for those that don't have much free time.
I decided on my local YMCA, which is huge and has a pool and dozens of different classes that I can take, and I also will get a trainer that will set me up on a program and meet with me every three weeks, more if needed, to check my results. They also have a 12 week program for beginners and you meet with the trainer and they teach you how to use the equipment and set you up on a program.

For those of you that feel uncomfortable, I don't have much to lose and have belonged to Gold's and Bali's in the past and felt a little uncomfortable there myself. But the Y is a family oriented place. There are all shapes, sizes and ages and I feel very comfortable. The aerobics instructor doesn't just pay attention to the skinny girls, she helps everyone.
Also, if you have kids most of them have daycare for a small charge. Ours also has a kid lounge where kids between the ages of about 8 and 14 can play pool, color or play fooz ball which is included in the family membership.

I joined Curves in January and I love it!

BUT, I also go with some ladies from work and we have a ball talking and the time passes before you know it. The few times I have gone alone I can easily see why it can get boring and repetitive.

My only complaint is that I pay $39 deducted from my checking account and everyone else I talk to at my Curves pays $29. I spoke to the owner and she just said "that was the price when you signed up" and I did sign the contract so I really have no recourse. However, she was good when I was out with a back injury and put my membership on "hold" and also told me if I couldn't come back to just get a note from my doctor and they would terminate my contract without penalty so I really can't be that mad.

I still love my Leslie Sansone tapes and I do them at home a couple of times a week.

Hi all:) I just finished 5 month of physical therapy due to having both knees replaced in Nov. My doc told me I would have to exercise at least 3 times a week to keep my knees in good condition, this was not good news for me:sobbing: I hate exercise. Well, I joined Curves and I love it, it is the perfect solution for someone that only exercised my elbow from my plate to my mouth:o I love the fact that everyone is a differant age and shape, no one is dressed in there tight little work out clothes. If any one is worried about being self concious DON'T you won't be.
