Some of my best thinking has been done in one of two places: either in the shower, or driving in the car. I found myself thinking about how Ziggy would post a weekly topic for us to discuss (which was great, thanks Ziggy!) I missed that, and thought maybe we should try and restart that. Maybe we could take turns introducing something to think about so the onus wouldn't be on one person.
So.. if you are willing, I thought I'd start:

********************
Self Talk
********************
Anyway, the thought hit me in the car that a lot of times our self talk is negative - and not just in obvious ways, but in subtle ways that maybe we dont' always realize.

Like the "I onlies": "I only lost 1.6 <or insert other amounts>", or "I only did 15 minutes on the bike." I'm sure you buddies can think of others!

I guess my point is that even subtle negativism can wear down a person's spirits. So when I find myelf thinking, "I've only....." I stop and try and rephrase it right away, to "I did .." or "I've lost..." or "I'm doing it, I'm on my way!"

Have you noticed yourself doing the "I onlies" or some other form of negative self-talk? What are you doing about it?

Tracy you are so right! I always think in terms of I only did this or I only lost this. I had a thought recently about keeping of list of good things that I had done and adding to it every day. Such as I exercsied 30 minutes today or something along those lines. I will start that today, and keep it somewhere I can look at it everyday. Oh, and I like your idea of a daily post of something to talk about.

Hi

I like this idea of a daily topic & I will try to participate when I can. I will have to reply in the evenings after work & am looking forward to this new idea for our board.

I had not thought about the "I only" aspect of things until you brought it up, but I find myself doing that a lot too. I think we need to boost our self-esteem & try to be more positive daily. I am daily around an individual who is negative about just about everyting & it can really drag a person down. I don't want to get that way. I'm going to be more aware of how I phrase things from now on. Thanks for the suggestion.
