Hi Buddies,
We definitely have enough interest in Cancun. Here is some more info.
We need to set a date.
Travel to Cancun requires identification. If you do not have a passport, you can find your nearest application site here Passport locator (http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/default.asp)
If you do not want to get a passport, you can travel to Mexico with two forms of identification. One must be a certified copy of your birth certificate. This means it must have the raised emblem. (You cannot use a photocopy)
To get a copy of your birth certificate, contact the department of vital statistics in the county of birth. The fee for this is usually less than $10. You will need this if you apply for a passport.
You will also need a photo I.D. if you don't have a passport. A drivers license will work.
It can take as long as 8-10 weeks to get this info, so don't wait till the last minute. It is a must, they will not let you into Mexico without it.
All airlines are starting to put restrictions on luggage. You will be allowed 2 checked bags per person and one carry-on in addition to a purse or laptop. Checked bags have a weight limit of 70 lbs. for domestic travel and 100 lbs. for international travel. The penalties for overweight graduate by the number of pounds. I had to pay $25.00 for 15 lbs. overweight when I went to Chicago.
Here are a few things to bring:
1. shorts
2. tops
3. swimsuit
4. 1 pair of slacks or a dress
5. walking shoes and socks
6. sandals
7. suncreen (I go to a tanning bed 2 months before we go and still use sunscreen) the sun in Mexico is not like the U.S. because it is closer to the equator.
The resort furnishes beach towels.
The trip package will include air, hotel, all food and drinks (including alcohol), transfers to and from the airport, and taxes.
The only thing you will need money for is souveniors, and excursions.
The trip will cost between $500-$800 depending on if we go for 3 night or 4 night. We will need to pay a deposit when it is booked and the balance will have to be paid 6 weeks before we leave.
If you are taking a spouse and children, I will need to know this for pricing. Children under 12 stay and eat at reduced rates.
I hope we can get a good turn-out for this trip. I'm really excited about it.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Cinna!

Thanks for all the valuable information! Having been to Cozumel on many, many occasions I can verify that it is hot, hot, hot! Uh Oh, time to get out my reggae music <me singing here> everybody's hot, hot, hot! Or this one.... One cent, five cent, ten cent, dollar! <me patting all the right body parts> :D Oh yeah! Time to dig out the reggae and start practicing the limbo! (151 proof rum punch is usually helpful about right now!)

I only see one problem and that is whether or not I can go! Problem is, that if we're on strike, nobody will predict when it will be over. The down payment that we make, is it refundable? I would certainly like to guarantee a spot, but I guess I'll have to play it by ear. The strike (if it happens) will begin August 2nd and surely by the end of the year we will have a better idea of it's outcome. How far in advance will the downpayment have to be made, and how much?

That's about all my questions for now........now off to find my Bob Marley CD's!

Graham (and others) -- if you do decide to go and there's some question about not being able to make it at the last minute, you might want to think about buying travel insurance. It's not that expensive (usually it's based proportionaly on the price of the trip), and would entitle you to a refund if something were to happen that would keep you from traveling. It must be something genuine however -- you can't just decide not to go and expect to get reimbursed. Any travel agency sells it -- in fact, AAA sells it, even if you didn't book the trip with them.

My major concern is DH. We will know more in about 3 weeks.
Kathy, I am doing the salsa, Latin music moves these weary bones!!!!
I'll check on some flights as soon as I have a minute behind the computer.

Cinna...

I have some questions..how many think their spouses are attending? and is anyone planning on bringing their children? Just curious on this part....I don't think we would bring DD due to school...

How much of a deposit is required...I am assuming this would have to paid when the trip is booked right?

And what dates are we considering?

Trish,
my DH is not going. The deposit would be around $150.00/person and would be required when the trip is booked.
Check out my new post for more info.

DH just told me that if we were in Chichen Itza on March 21st. The sunshines down on this moment and you can see a shadow of a snake crawling down the side of it and other shadows! It is a really big happening.
