It was great. A friend of mine and I noticed how the young-uns didn't really get into Jennifer Hoilday at first...they likely didn't know who she was. Since she really does own that song and developed the part of Effie into what it is known as now, I'm really glad that the show gave her her props. I read a bio on her that said Effie was supposed to die out pretty early, but Jennifer Holiday fought to give the character more life, no pun intended :bcb_bigsm.
Anywho, I enjoyed it. DH and I are gong to see the play Dreamgirls with Jennifer Holiday this month in Atlanta. I'm looking forward to it.

I saw the original Dreamgirls way back when. After Effie sange "I'm Not Going" she didn't appear in the play any more. I like that the movie kept her character around longer.

I saw the original also. I'd like to think that I saw Jennifer Holliday, but I honestly don't remember. :bcb_huh: And I also didn't remember that the character of Effie wasn't around after that number. I do remember getting chills when she sang it........it must have been Jennifer. :bcb_wink3

I read the Jennifer Holiday had some issues after a while. The entire wikipedia material is a lot to read, but the
History (click here) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamgirls) section gives a lot of background on the development of Effie, and also explains why she seemed to have disappeared after a while.

I'm glad J. Holliday got her chance to shine at the BET awards. She wanted to play Effie in the movie, but that would have been a hot mess. She felt slighted by the movie producers because they barely acknowledged her part in making the play that the movie was based on. Her vocal range is CRAZY though... and since we're on a weight loss message board has anyone see her before:

Here she is in 1982 at the Tonys... I believe she had the gastric bypass surgery, but good for her for managing to keep the weight off all these years...
