So I went to my first meeting and found out something I didn't know. You all might know already but onions and carrots change points when cooked. The GL said that they are the only 2 veggies that do that. I thought I would share incase someone else didn't know.

She also went over cracker points - I forgot my notes on that one but I will post it on Monday. What I do remember is that low fat doesn't always pay off with crackers so we have to be careful.

Have a great weekend!!

I only used to count carrots years and years ago when it was a #4 vegetable in the original WW program. Now I don't count either carrots nor onions.

I don't count them either... the max of onions I can put in a meal is 2 adn carrots about 4-5 b& since I devide my food to at least 4 ppl, then I don't feel that I have to count that share I've eaten...

I understand that cooking carrots and onions causes one to have to count points. Can someone explain what happens to increase calories in these vegetables with cooking?

Thanks.

I have never heard of this, but when I check it out this is what I get

cooked carrots 1 cup = 54.6 cals and 4.6 grams fiber = 0.5 points

raw carrots 1 cup chopped = 52.5 cals and 3.6 grams fiber =0.5 points

as per nutritiondata.com and /www.alexnolan.net points calculator

It’s that the glycemic (sp) rate goes up in them, in other words it makes the sugars react. Something like that…. The only reason I care is because instead of eating a big piece of steak like I usually would, I cook onions (sometimes 1 cup just for me!) with green peppers and mushrooms and just have a very small piece of the steak. Who woulda thunk it??!

Carrots and onions both lose volume in cooking, and since they are relatively high in calories (as veggies go) they must go over the 1 Point mark.

However a full cup or cooked carrots OR cooked onions is a lot. I imagine few people eat enough of either at one sitting to have to count it. I know I don't.

Ginaki - Wow, it's great to find a WW from the prehistoric days like me. I remember #4 vegetables - although actually weren't they 4B vegetables. Peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes are the ones I remember. And you had to eat one of them a day. I would love to still have those old 70's book. The program has changed so much. LillieG

Our meeting leader said she still does not count them even though they become a 'countable' veggie when cooked. I do not much like cooked carrots and only eat them once in a while .

I did not know that about onions, I love cooked onions so this is bad news to me.

We never gained weight eating onions and carrots

Week 1 Getting Started book says:

Carrots:
cooked, 1 cup = 1 point
uncooked, 1 cup = 0 points
baby 10 carrots = 0 points
large 2 carrots = 0 points

Onions:
cooked, 1 cup = 1 point
uncooked, 1 cup = 0 points

onion rings, fast food, 1 serving (8-9 rings) = 7 points
